He screamed when it happened, as anyone would. It was terrifying. I watched as the guys tackled him to the ground and turned out his pockets, searching for anything valuable. Whilst they weren't looking I pulled my phone from my pocket, about to call for the police, when the ran for it. But not before grabbing my phone from me and leaving me with what I guessed would become a black eye.

As soon as they had left, I called out to Chappo, who was still lying on the ground. He didn't answer. I yelled as loud as I could. He didn't move a muscle. I put my hands on the wheels of my chair, but it wouldn't move. I looked behind and saw the break was on. I couldn't reach it. I only had one choice, and without thinking I flung myself from my wheelchair.

I landed on the ground with a thud. I was much closer to Chappo now. I put my arms out in-front of me and pulled along the ground. Slowly, I etched closer and closer to Chappo.

When I finally got to him, I immediately checked his pulse. It was strong. He was just unconscious. He was ok.

I rolled him into the recovery position and opened his eyes. His pupils looked good. His airway was clear. I just needed to find someone to help lift him up.

I saw Jesse, Hoppo and Harries approaching in the distance. I waved at them, trying to catch their attention. They didn't see me. They entered the lifeguard tower and shut the door. I knew one of them would be coming back out soon to set up the flags for the day, but I didn't want to leave Chappo waiting that long. Bruises had begun appearing across his face. I knew I need to get to the tower, it was so close, only about 20 yards. How they didn't see Chappo and I, I don't know. But I did know one thing. Chappo had been so good to me recently, I wasn't about to let him down when he needed me.

I looked up and I saw we were lying right by the railings. I put my right hand onto the railing, my left hand on the ground, and somehow got myself up onto my knees. I then put my left hand onto the railing as well. I hoisted myself up, and I was standing.

I felt weak, dizzy. My legs felt like jelly, and I knew at any moment they were going to give way from under me.

I took a few deep breaths and took a step. I then took another, and another, and another. Very slowly I made my way closer to the tower door. After a few more steps, I was only about two footsteps from the door. But these were going to be the hardest two. The railing ended. I had to take these last two steps myself.

I was ready to admit defeat and bail on the whole idea, when I looked back at Chappo. I saw him lying there, unconscious, and I knew if the situation were reversed he would already be at the tower getting me help. I took another deep breath, looked straight at the door and let go of the railing.

I lifted my right leg slowly, and took a step. Every muscle in my legs burning, screaming at me to stop. But no way was I going to give up now. I mustered up what little energy I had left and took the final step. I had made it.

I took a few moments to gather myself, my entire body screaming in pain. I lifted up my hand, which felt weak and numb, and knocked on the door. I heard voices inside, then movement and finally Harries came and opened the door.

He stared at me, opened mouthed, as I leaned forward and rested myself against the door frame. "Tiff, are you ok? What's happening? You shouldn't be standing, come in here now and sit." I shook my head, and began to speak, only now realizing I was so thirsty, my mouth was so dry. "Chappo and I" I gasp, exhausted and still out of breath from the effort of walking. "Chappo and I were on our way home. Some guys jumped Chappo. He's out there, unconscious. My wheelchair breaks were on. I couldn't do anything. Threw myself from the wheelchair. Checked on him. Got up. Walked here. Need help." As I went on, my sentences became shorter and shorter, each requiring much more effort than I was capable of. "Oh my gosh." Harries said, as he scooped me up into his arms. "No more walking for you alright. Now bring me to Chappo."

I heard Hoppo and Jesse behind us, arguing over who would stay in the tower, who would come with us to Chappo. After a minute of arguing, Jesse won over and followed us out. We quickly rushed over to Chappo, Harries still carrying me. We all got down on the ground next to him, as he started to come around. He had two black eyes, and a severely bruised nose, but he was ok.

"Man Chappo," Harries sighed, "You really have got an amazing girl right here." I glanced at Harries, then at Chappo. He smiled, weakly, at me. I smiled back at him. I was so proud of the person Chappo had help me become.
