Luke-
“Luke, can you put Piper to sleep tonight, please? Talia’s in labour, I gotta run to the hospital, I might be there all night.” You begged, jamming your foot into the Ugg boot that had been resting at the foot of your couch, shoving your phone into the pocket of your black sweatpants as you did so. It was around 6:45pm on a Sunday, a measly 45 minutes before your daughter’s set school-night bedtime, and as your best friend’s husband texted you that after 46 weeks, your best friend finally went into labour and her baby boy was on the way, you had to leave as soon as possible, leaving your six year old daughter in the care of your blonde haired husband. Luke gave you a soft smile from where he was lounging back into the cushions, leaning forward and pressing a delicate kiss to your makeup-free, freshly moisturized cheek. “Of course, darling. Don’t sweat it.” Luke smiled, relief flooding your face. “Thank you. And can you put the clothes in the dryer? I’d appreciate it,” you asked, standing up and running your hand through your slightly frazzled hair. “No problem. Now hurry up and go, Talia needs you.” your husband gave you a big lopsided grin, you smiling back. “Thank you so much. I’ll text you in an hour,” you rushed over to the door, grabbing your keys off the hook and bustling out to your car, leaving your husband alone in the living room and alone in the house with the curly-haired six year old that was Piper. Luke glanced at the television screen, losing interest in the film that had been playing prior, and clicked it off, getting up and walking upstairs to where your daughter was in her playroom. She sat at her pink Disney princess table, a colouring book splayed out open in front of her, her big purple plastic bin of practically every Crayola crayon on Earth. Her curls were pinned back into a simple ponytail, a big 5 Seconds of Summer shirt hanging from her shoulders, going down to her pink legging-covered knees. “Hi, Princess.” Luke smiled, walking into the room and kneeling down beside the table, Piper giggling and looking up at her dad. “Hi, Daddy!” she squealed, setting down her Tickle Me Pink crayon in the crease of the colouring book. “Look, Daddy, I coloured you and Mommy a picture!” Piper boasted, holding up the book, the crayon slipping off and crashing onto Ariel’s red hair. Luke grinned brightly as she turned it around, showing a scribbled-in picture of Elsa from Frozen, the Hemmings’ family current obsession. “Oh, it’s beautiful, Pipe!” Luke gasped, grinning and taking the book from Piper. “I love her turquoise hair.” “I liked it better than the white!” Piper giggled, “Plus, white wouldn’t show up on the paper.” Luke let out a small chuckle, setting the book down on an empty space on the table. “It’s almost bedtime, my little Ice Queen,” Luke smiled, picking her up from the plastic chair, sitting down on her pink rug and setting his daughter down onto his lap. “How about we get you into some comfy jammies,” Luke mumbled, kissing Piper’s cheek and tickling her, giggles erupting from her small, pink lips. “And we brush our teeth and I’ll read you your favorite bedtime story.” Piper giggled and nodded. “Okay, Daddy!” Piper quickly agreed, scrambling out of her father’s lap and running to her dresser, painted white and adorned with hand-painted pink flowerbuds, courtesy of Ashton and his wife. She tugged out her bottom drawer, the one with all her pyjamas tucked inside. Luke watched with a lazy grin as Piper rummaged through all the different coloured garments, all different materials, for different seasons and weather changes. He laughed as he heard her grunt in frustration, obviously in search of her favorite pair. When Piper finally found what she was looking for- white thermal pyjamas with little penguins on ice skates with firetruck red scarves. Luke shuffled over to the small girl and smiled, helping her out of her top and leggings to get her into her cozy sleep clothes. He laughed, smoothing out his daughter’s curly blonde mane, smiling and pressing a kiss to her forehead as she got settled into the new clothes. All he could do was smile as she ran to go grab her favorite hardcover book from the shelf, watching in admiration as she shone with excitement. His life was complete, bundled up with a bow at the sight of his daughter.
