Prequel - Louis: Paralysis (4)

Louis POV

It has been a week since the accident and I finally got my neck brace off this morning. Today they were getting me up and in the wheelchair to begin my physical therapy. They told me that I was going to be in the hospital for a month with extensive upper body strength training, while also learning how to adjust to life in a wheelchair.

Harry has been great in terms of support. This has hit me really hard and I've been scared to think of what this is going to do for our relationship, but every time I get those thoughts in my head, he is there to reassure me that he isn't going anywhere and that he'll be there for me as long as I let him, and of course I will.

Last night was really hard. I had a nightmare replaying the accident and Harry and the staff were having trouble waking me up from it. It took Harry, and about 4 nurses and doctors to finally shake me awake from it. To say I was shaken up was a huge understatement and I was up the rest of the night. I was really tired this morning, but they gave me coffee for the first time in a week so now I have a little more energy.

I've noticed that Harry hasn't said much about the accident. I go to ask him about it and he tells me the same thing he has told me every other time I've asked him about it. "It was scary." "I thought I lost you." Then he'll turn it on me and say "do you remember anything about it?" and I tell him not really and then the conversation turns into some other topics. I decided to just leave it for now as he probably doesn't want to talk about it.

"Good afternoon Louis." The nurse said as she came in for her afternoon checks. She checked all my meds and my vitals and she confirmed that I was all set for my physical therapist today, which made me happy as I was finally able to get out of this bed and maybe take a proper shower. The doctor came in a few minutes later.

"Alright, so just to review the few things we have done over the past few days and then the plan moving forward." I nodded and Harry came to sit beside me. "So of course we removed your neck brace this morning and you seem to be adjusting to it well. We will have your physical therapist, Alex, take a look and assess it. Your stitches will dissolve on their own, so just leave them alone. They look really good, so they'll be coming out in the next week or so. We are getting you up today so we can assess the level of your paralysis and the level of your mobility so that we can develop a physical therapy plan for you. Alex will visit you in a few hours to begin your first session. Do you have any questions for us?"

"Would I be able to shower?" I asked.

"Yes of course. We can get you up once we are finished and help you. We will just have to cover your cast so that it doesn't get wet, but yes of course you can shower. Amy, do you want to help him with that?" The one who I assumed was named Amy nodded and began to unhook me from my IV and the monitor as the doctor finished up his speech that I didn't really listen to at the end.

"I'll be back to see you in a few days Louis to discuss things with your physical therapist and finish up your plan. Enjoy the rest of the week." I shook his hand and then he left the room.

"Alright I'm Amy and as the doctor said, we are happy to help you shower. Would you be more comfortable to have your boyfriend to help you? I'll just make sure you get in and have everything you need."

"Yeah I mean if Haz you are okay with that?" I looked at him and he laughed.

"Of course Lou." I smiled.

"Okay so we are first going to transfer you to the shower chair we have here. So in order to do that we have to use this slide board, which might be a little difficult as you only have one arm, but don't worry I will help you. So let's get you to the edge of the bed first." It took some time, but I did eventually get in the shower chair and Amy wheeled me to the bathroom with Harry following close behind.
