Chapter 9: Is it Love?

Kiwi's POV:

I woke up sweating with adrenaline pumping through my veins. The dream I had just had was about being unable to protect or provide for my 'family.' I guess that's kind of what we are now....isn't it? In the dream they had ended up dead, and I couldn't stop thinking it was my fault.

I hopped out of bed, quietly getting dressed in a blue shirt, green hoodie, black leggings, and a pair of red converse shoes. I checked the time on my watch. 5:56am. Walking into the bathroom, I brushed my teeth and pulled my hair into a braid, then I sprayed myself with some vanilla and honey suckle perfume, walked over to Kaia's bed, kissed her forehead, and whispered "I love you."

I headed downstairs, grabbing a bucket and going to get some water for the day. As I dipped the pail into the lake, I looked down at the water. It was making little waves...which was weird, seeing as there wasn't even a breeze. I quickly rose and went back to the cabin, setting the water down by the sink. putting it out of my mind, I decided to exercise. I ran 10 laps around the cabin, making sure to keep my breathing in check, then I did 10 push-ups, sit-ups, and held a plank for 1 minute. I decided that I would try to do this everyday from now on. Before everything happened, this was my workout 3 days a week, along with some weight lifting and hockey specific training. Now I needed to get faster and stronger. I needed to protect my friends.

After resting for about 3 mins, I got up and did it all a second time. Then I went inside and ate some breakfast. At about 8am I decided to get the others up.

"Wake up everyone!" I yell. 5 mins later everyone is dressed and sitting down to eat.

"Kiwi, can you help with my buttons?" Kaia asks.

"I made you all some breakfast." I said.

"This is cold cereal..." Aly said.

"I never said it was hot...or that I was a great cook." I reply. everyone sits down to eat, and about 10 minutes later, I start giving everyone jobs.

"Ten, Malus, you start figuring out lunch. Aly and Omega, you're on watch. Flint, you helping me with firewood." Everyone nods, thankful for something to keep their minds and bodies busy.

Ten's POV:

Malus and I sat at the table trying to figure out what we should make for lunch. We also talked about everything we used to do. After a while I decided to head up to our room and grab my iPhone and earbuds. Music helps me think sometimes.

As I entered our room, with it's two small beds, I heard a creak behind me and turned to see Malus shut the door and walk towards me. My skin let off a grey-ish glow, showing my confusion as she started to push me.

"M-malus? Wh-w- Ah!" We fell onto one of the beds, Malus landing on top of me, leaning down to my ear.

"I know who you are Ten. I've seen your animations online. I was coming up to the Yukon to meet you..." She said, leaning closer. Her lips touched mine gently, then more passionately. I hear the front door open and close and Malus and I get up, me glowing a mix of pink and red. We go downstairs to see Kiwi looking flustered.

Kiwi's POV:

A half hour earlier...

Having grown up with my family, I knew how to use a number of tools. Including a chainsaw. I grabbed one from the back, along with an axe, because we only had the one. Flint reached for the chainsaw, but I pulled it away.

"I got it!" I said, a little frustrated. He looked at me with amused eyes. I started with a tree that had fallen nearby, sawing it into chunks. when I was done, I was already a bit tired, having done a workout that morning. Flint took the saw and moved away to start on another tree, chuckling. I grabbed the axe and started chopping the pieces I had cut.

After about 20 minutes, I stopped for a drink of water. He had put the saw down a while ago and grabbed another axe to help me chop the wood up. He paused and came over.

"Lets take a break. We don't want to push ourselves too hard." He said, looking a little concerned. I leaned against a tree and closed my eyes. When I opened them I saw Flint standing over me, one arm against the tree, eyes locked on mine.

"Why have you been ignoring me?" He asked. I looked down shyly. "Is it because I kissed you?"

I started to move to get away, but he blocked me.

"ANSWER ME!" He yelled.

"It was my first kiss, okay!?!?" I half shouted back. He looked shocked.

"I...I'm sorry I took your first kiss.....but I'm not sorry I kissed you." He stated. I was angry and scare, sad, confused, all at once. I had no idea how to feel about this guy. Suddenly, I noticed he had closed his eyes and was leaning in to kiss me again.

"W-wait-" I started too late. He started off a passionate kiss. I didn't know how to react, but I started to kiss him back. His lips were soft...I had to stop this. I pushed him off of me.

"Stop. We're in the middle of a Zombie apocalypse. We don't have time for distractions Flint. And what do you think you're doing, messing with my head like this? Kissing me, playing games as if I'm some sort of joke?"

"Kiwi, I'm not trying to mess with your head, or your feelings! I'm serious about this, and I'm not giving up on you..." He looked deep into my eyes. I didn't know how to respond, so I just ran inside. For the next long while, it felt pretty weird to be around Flint. Maybe we're not family...maybe we're something more. Malus and Ten have been acting weird to.....
