Chapter 1

October 11th, 2016

Huff huff huff

Ten sprinted, running from something or someone behind him.

He could feel occasional claws on his back.

Huff huff huff

Ten breathed heavily, gasping for air and nearing the end of his energy.

Dogwood branches slapped his body like a cold high five.

Ten jolted awake, realizing he was dreaming. Already wide eyed and his heart beating fast, he turned to the clock.

4:23am

He sighed loudly. He had woken a little while before his alarm was meant to go off. I might as well get up now... he thought to himself.

Groaning and stretching, Ten made his way into the kitchen. Upon opening the fridge, a grotesque, fleshy smell poured out. He immediately slammed it. The fridge had broken, and since he had been eating at work all week, he hadn't noticed.

Groaning at his misfortune, he poured some dry cereal into a bowl, and walked out onto his balcony.

CAWWWWWW

Ten jumped. A singular but unusually loud magpie flew off from the terrace. He was reminded of a poem he had heard about magpies as a child. He hummed the tune to himself.

One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret,
never to be told...

He sighed and dragged his feet inside, tired after a restless, nightmarish slumber. He turned on the bathroom light. Surprise... a new zit appeared on his forehead. Stress and sweat from his idol career was causing him to break out. He winced as he popped it, and quickly continued washing up.

Pulling a shirt onto his head, he turned on the tv. Cartoons, next, reality tv, next... he finally settled on the news. He began to pack his news when he glanced up to see a headline. The headline. The one that would change his life forever.
