Marina sat in the cold, burning ice with only one bite of bread left in her backpack. It all came down to this. Only three tributes alive, but only one of them could come out victorious.
"You killed me, Marina." Said the male tribute from district four, who had his throat slashed.
"No, no no. Johnny, I didn't kill you. You know that." The girl started sobbing hysterically, while the blood from Johnny's throat splattered on her face.
"You killed me, Marina. You slashed my throat when you were behind me."
The boy's face looked pale white and his eyes were red. Marina truly hadn't killed the boy, the career pack had done this to him. Both tributes from 1 and the female tribute from 2 had killed him.
"Johnny, I didn't kill you. Please don't blame me." Marina was now screaming and crying like a madwoman.
"Stop lying to the people, Marina. Admit you killed me!" Johnny started looking more crazy as he said those words. His eyes started glitching and Marina knew in that moment, that that wasn't Johnny. That was a mutt. The girl took her sword discretely and when the mutt started glitching again, she slashed his throat.
Marina fell to her knees crying even harder. "I miss you, Johnny. Thank you for everything."
Marina Black entered those games ready to sacrifice herself for the twelve year-old tribute, who she considered a brother. It couldn't happen and the roles were reversed, and little Johnny Woods sacrificed himself for her.
"Marina, Marina. Marina, wake up." The victor was being shaken by Finnick, who looked panicked at the state of the panting and sweating girl.
Marina gasped awake and Finnick flinched when the girl started hitting anything that was in sight. "Marina, calm down, please."
Some sense started to regain in Marina's brain and she understood she was in her bed, not in the games. "I'm really sorry, Finnick. I just had some bad dreams."
"About the games?"
"Yeah..."
"Do you wanna talk about them?" Finnick looked at her with a worried look, but he didn't have the courage to get closer to her. He sat next to her in the bed, hoping it would make her feel comfortable.
"The dream was about the mutt that took shape of Johnny." Marina looked at Finnick sadly and he had look of a grimace in his face.
"I remember watching that with my parents, it was one of the worse moments in the games. We were all so scared that it could happen to me, and look, it's probably gonna happen."
"Lesson of the day, Fin: never manifest the negative things."
"Never manifest the negative things," Finnick repeated.
"Not that I mind your presence, but why were you in my room?"
The male tribute blushed sligthly. "Oh, Ma-Mags told me to come get you. We need to eat breakfast."
"Damn, today's your tribute parade. You ready?"
"No, but do I actually have a choice?"
"Probably not. You could make history and be the first ever tribute to miss the parade, but the gamemakers may actually blow you up, even before you step onto the platform." Both kids laughed and it seemed like a genuine moment.
"Marina, you remember when you told me you could train me personally?"
"Yeah."
"Are we going to start tomorrow?"
"If you want to, but remember you need to show up first at the group training. Check out some allies, maybe."
"Sure, it's just that I really want to live, I want to learn everything I can."
"You will. Worry about that tomorrow, focus all your energy in making the Capitol and the sponsors love you. They'll make your game easier." Finnick smiled softly at her and she replicated it.
