MANDALA: SYMBOLS OF THE UNIVERSE

Written by- GS_Stella27

Mandalas, as fascinating as they seem, hold great spiritual importance in both Hinduism and Buddhism. They have a belief that once one enters the Mandala and proceeds towards the center, their sorrows get converted into joy and happiness as they are guided through a cosmic transformation of the universe.

Deriving its meaning from a word in Sanskrit language meaning 'circle', Mandala is the spiritual and ritual symbols that have astonishing capabilities of boosting up the immune system, reducing stress and pain, lowering blood pressure, promoting sleep, and even easing depression. These symbols have been used for meditation, prayer, healing, and art therapy for a very long time. Not confining them only to Hinduism and Buddhism, even western artists have started taking interest in these circular geometric patterns, eventually developing a whole new art form. With time, these Mandalas have not been confined only to circles, but with the creativity of the artists all around the world, they have taken various shapes and forms.

~COLORS AND MANDALA~

Colours have always been an inseparable part of our lives. Several artists create and colour mandalas out of creative interest or for relaxation, but very few realize that colouring mandala in itself is a type of art therapy in which an artist either colours his fears away or colours his inner strength. Every colour used in the mandala holds a deeper meaning. So, let us have a look at these meanings first before delving further into the topic.

RED colour denotes strength, energy, and passion, whereas PINK stands for love and femininity. ORANGE is the symbol of creativity, self-awareness, and transformation, and YELLOW at the same time represents wisdom, learning, laughter, and happiness.

The colour of physical healing, psychic ability, nature, and caring is GREEN, and the one for emotional healing, inner peace, and meditation is the colour BLUE. The PURPLE colour denotes spiritual focus, whereas the BLACK colour represents deep thinking, mystery, and individuality.

~ HOW ARE MANDALAS USED? ~

Apart from being used for meditation, prayer, healing and art therapy, Mandalas have also been used for various reasons as they are often associated with the restoration of body, mind, and heart.

Since ancient times, these Mandalas have been used in temples, and on the walls. They are also used to teach people in religious training. Nowadays, we can also find these in dream catchers, something that has fascinated many.
