When you arrived at home, still annoyed from your encounter with the unpleasant stranger, your mother berated you for being late, just as you expected. "Where on Earth have you been?" she asked you frantically, "I've been worried sick! And you had to walk home in the dark! And you're empty-handed!"
You loved your mother as much as the next person, but she could be a tad bit overprotective. She worried about you quite a lot and you didn't blame her - the world could be a very scary place - but it could be quite annoying. "I'm sorry," you replied in a reassuring tone, "I ran into this dumb jerk at the store and he took the last Pocky, and then I realized it was late, so I just went straight home, I'm sorry for not texting you." Her expression changed to one of relief.
"Okay. I just wanted you to come home quickly, because there's someone here to see you in the living room." Someone here to see you? Who could be here at this hour? It was kind of late, and the first day of school was tomorrow. You made your way over to the living room to investigate, grinning when you found a tall, but not as tall as the unpleasant stranger from earlier, freckled boy with grayish-green hair and his signature flyaway strand sticking up at the stop. He saw you and returned your grin.
"F/n! You're back!" he said as you ran over to embrace him.
"Hey, Tadashi!"
Yamaguchi Tadashi has been a family friend for as long as you remember. His mother went to high school and college with yours, and their friendship carried on past their education. Therefore, you two grew up together, and although you stopped seeing each other as you got older, you friendship remained strong. You loved Tadashi. He was kind and funny and an amazing listener, and you always enjoyed the time you spent together. When you got older, your friendship was slightly affected by the fact that you went to different schools and had busy schedules, so you both were ecstatic to learn that you would be starting your first year at Miyagi Prefectural Karasuno High School together. A few of your friends were going to Karasuno with you, but your closest ones had gone on to other schools, so you were relieved to have a close friend to go into the school year with.
"Sorry, I didn't know you were coming, or else I wouldn't have been so late! I ran into this grade-A asshole at the store." You proceeded to tell him about the unpleasant stranger, and like usual, he was quite a good listener - laughing and timing his reactions exactly right.
When you described the stranger's looks to further make fun of him, though, he realized that your description of him sounded quite a lot like his best friend from school, after all, he had the same tall, lanky body and the same rectangular-framed glasses and the same messy blond hair. He certainly wouldn't have put it past his friend to do something like that, either. And to top it all off, the store was a short distance from where he lived.
It had to be him, but he figured it would ruin your mood even more if he informed you that the stranger that had given you such a hard time was a very good friend of his. He also knew that his friend would be going to Karasuno High School as well, so he decided to leave that awkward introduction until tomorrow.
"So, are you nervous for the new school year?" he asked, changing the subject, "Because I kind of am. At least we'll be in class 1-4 together."
"Yeah, we're some smart cookies, aren't we? Apparently, though, it's a freaking college prepatory class. Just the thought of that makes me nervous. I mean, I know I'm a certified genius, but I'm used to being the smartest one in the room, not with a bunch of people that are actually on my level!" you giggled at that last sentence, and he followed suit.
You two spent the rest of the night discussing your worries and excitement about your first year of high school, and by the time Tadashi had to go home, you'd managed to temporarily rid the boy of his nerves. Before he left, you both opened two cans of soda and raise them, clinking them.
"Cheers," you said, "to our upcoming rose-colored campus life!"
"To our rose-colored campus life!"
You hugged Tadashi goodbye and he saw himself off. Soon, it was time for bed, and you went to sleep with nothing but excitement about what's to come.
