You hadn't meant for today to end up like this. All you had wanted was to come to support your boyfriend at one of his volleyball games. But now, he wordlessly sat across from you at the dinner table, refusing to even make eye contact with you and making the rest of his teammates stare at the two of you awkwardly.
But then again, your life seemed to be filled with things you hadn't meant to happen.
What could you have done differently throughout this whole situation? You went through what had happened again in your head to deduce if you were really the one at fault.
It had all begun when your boyfriend, who had been feeling especially sweet that day, invited you to his upcoming volleyball match. Normally, it had been an unspoken agreement that you would come to every single one of his volleyball games, but this time, he had invited you, so you were sure that the match was incredibly important to him. So you had gone all out for him, wearing his old jersey from his first year and painting two white 11s on each of your cheeks.
You hadn't gotten a chance to speak to him before the game beyond a quick kiss on the cheek and a "Good luck", but you could tell by the small smile he had flashed you when you made eye contact with him at the start of the game that he appreciated you. It was fleeting, but one year of a relationship with Kei had taught you to notice the little displays of affection he employed more often than you'd expect.
You loved Kei's volleyball games, but the stands could be pretty lonely. Hitoka sat on the bench with the coach, Tadashi and Shoyo were on the court, and Saeko and Akiteru couldn't always make it. This time, they were both conveniently missing, and you weren't well acquainted enough with the guys from the Karasuno neighborhood association for you to go sit with them. Still, watching your boyfriend and his friends play filled you with admiration and pride, so you could reconcile being lonely for a bit.
You jumped up cheered as Tadashi completed a jump serve, a move that he had come so far to excel at. When you sat back down, you found an unfamiliar body sitting next to you and panicked slightly. "I'm sorry, I should have asked before I sat down next to you." said the boy, whose extreme good looks would have had you infatuated right there if you didn't have a boyfriend already. Still, just because you had a boyfriend didn't mean you couldn't look around, and this boy's dark brown hair and green eyes were utterly captivating. He looked distinctly Western, but he spoke perfect Japanese, he wore a tracksuit indicating that he had a match up next, and the smile he wore showed you that he was trustworthy. You relaxed a little bit.
"No worries. You can sit down. It's nice to have someone to sit next to for once during these games," you confessed to him, flashing a smile back at him.
He furrowed a brow at you. "How come you come to the games by yourself? Do you have a family member who plays volleyball?"
"I guess you could say that," you said, gesturing in Kei's general direction on the court. "My boyfriend plays volleyball. As you could probably tell by the giant 11s on my cheeks, he's number 11."
