⚠️‼️TRIGGER WARRING‼️⚠️
MENTION OF NEEDLES AND BLOOD MULTIPLE TIMES. SUGGESTED FOR MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY!

"I think we just told the whole hospital we're dating.." I respond. He laughs. "That was-"
"Quick." I finish his sentence. "Yeah.." he says. "Yeah." I say. Both of our pagers go off at the same time we look at them and then look at each other. "Get the fuck out of my way." I yell at an intern who was standing in the hallway holding bags of blood. "Move" cormac yells. The intern doesn't move so I push him. "Hey" he says as the blood bags burst all over him "we said to move!" Cormac yells as we continue to run to the pit. "Tommy." Cormac says lightly as we get there. "Get him to trauma 1 page Bailey!" I yell as I put in gloves and a gown. It's just Cormac, tommy and I in the room. Tommy is unconscious Cormac looks at him and then looks at me "Mer" he says obviously hurt. "It's okay, we'll get him better." I respond. The paramedic walks in. "Was found on the bathroom floor in school mom has been called and is on her way from work... she works two hours away." He says. I look at him "thank you we have it from here." I say the paramedic nods and leaves. An intern and Bailey walk in. "What'd we know?" She asks. "four year old male found unconscious in the bathroom at school. We need a CT." I say. Cormac's standing the the corner of the room leaning his head on his hand on the wall. The intern and Bailey roll Tommy to CT. I walk over to Cormac gently putting my hand on his back. "Hey we don't know what's wrong yet, don't assume the worst." I say. He nods "I just- Tommy- I need to text Quinn." He says I nod. "Look at me." I say. He turns and looks at me. "Hey, you are okay and Tommy is okay." I say he smiles and puts his head on my fore head. "Thank you mer." He says.

I had texted Quinn and told her I had Tommy. She said she would be here as soon as she could. "CT came back clear... what do you want to do now?" Bailey asks. I look at mer because I honestly didn't know. "Shot gun?" She asks. "Yeah shot gun him but add the test for type one diabetes." I reply. They both look at me like I'm insane. "Rush that one." I say. Bailey says "okay" and then leaves. "You think he has diabetes?" Meredith questions "I think we should leave all doors open." I reply. "I don't want him to but he's showing signs." I continue. Meredith nods. Quinn gets here so Meredith and I walk to the pit again to meet her. "Hi how is he?" She asks worried. "He's still unconscious. CT it was clear." I say. "Is there anything new you have noticed from him? We gave him a bunch of tests." Meredith says. Quinn nods her head "yes actually. He's fully potty trained but keeps wetting the bed..." Mer looks at me as Quinn says this. "And he's been drink water like crazy and he lost weight." She continues. Without thinking I sprint to Tommy's room. Grabbing a testing kit on the way.

AUTHORS NOTE/://:
I don't normally do notes in my middle of chapters but this chapter maybe confusing if I don't. If you guys are confused about who Tommy is; Tommy is the patient Meredith and Cormac worked on, the appendectomy kid. Diabetes is a very serious illness and it's very important to me so I wanted to add it. Everything in this story about diabetes is real information.  Check comments for more information as the story goes on. Ask any questions you have I will be able to answer them all. (:

I get to his room walk over to his bed and reach for his hand. I immediately grab his index finger. I hate doing this to kids. I take the poker and poke his finger making a drop of blood appear. I put a test strip into the meter and then let the strip suck up the blood. The meter reads 490 "fuck" I say. Meredith runs in Quinn right behind her "what's his blood sugar?" Meredith asks. "490, page Bailey now." I yell. "What's happening? You need to tell me what's going on." Quinn says as I roll Tommy on his back grabbing my flashlight and flashing it in his eyes. "Get her out of here, Quinn I'll come talk to you in a minute." I say. Bailey comes running in. "What? You paged me 911 three times with in one minute." She says frantic. "His blood sugar is 490. We need to immediately test him for diabetes and we need to do it fast." I respond. Meredith walk's in with the kit to take a blood sample and starts right away. "Rush this!" She yells handing it to the intern who just stands there. "For fucks sake, what do you not understand about rush?" She yells running out of the room to the lab. "I need an I.V fluids and a slow drip of insulin." I say to Bailey, she nods and walks out. The intern is just standing there. "You're fired. I don't give a fuck what Bailey says you're fired, if someone yells you to move you do." I say. He just looks at me and nods. "Leave." I say. Bailey walks back with an I.V which I start immediately. "Can you please get his mom?" I ask Bailey as I stick the needle in Tommy's vein. Quinn walks in. "Here sit down." Bailey says. "Thank you." Quinn says.

"I need this back now! It's for the chief and a possible type one diabetic." I say to the lady at the lab. She nods "it will be ten minutes." She says. I call Cormac. "I'll know in ten minutes." I say. "Okay hurry." He replies. Ten minutes go by "yeah it's positive he's in DKA." The lady says. "Thank you." I say then run as fast as I can back to Tommy's room. "DKA" I yell as I walk in. "Shit" Cormac says. "Let's get him a head CT and increase the insulin drip." Bailey says. As she and a new intern roll Tommy back to CT.

Meredith and I sit down by Quinn. "Quinn this is going to be a lot, I'm going to go slow but if at any time you have questions or need me to stop just say so." I say she nods and I look at Meredith. "Quinn has type one diabetes. Do you know what that is?" Meredith asks. Quinn shakes her head no. "Type one diabetes is an autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease means it just happens we don't know why or how. There is no cure for this. Diabetes is when a part of the pancreas doesn't work properly. The part of the pancreas produces insulin. Insulin is needed for our everyday lives. Insulin takes carbs from our food and brings it to where they need to go weather that's to make it a protein or fat. If our bodies don't have insulin our bodies start to eat themselves that's why you saw Tommy loose weight." Meredith says. "Do you understand everything I have told you so far?" Meredith questions.
