Prologue
"Go Jets Go! Go Jets Go!"
This chant was an every game occurrence at the MTS Centre, home of the Winnipeg Jets. People were ecstatic to have the Jets back. 15 years is a long time to not have an NHL franchise. Never seeing an NHL game, EVER, I was thrilled to be able to finally experience the atmosphere inside a real NHL arena.
Except I wasn't seeing this game. Or any game really. I worked at the MTS Centre. Merchandising to be exact. I got to hear the roar of the crowd, the horn as we scored, but I never saw a single puck drop, a single goal. It sucked, a lot. I'm a passionate hockey fan, have been for the past 11 years, why couldn't I be lucky enough to see a game?
I worked outside the bowl, in the concourse. Every game was the same. People were allowed into the arena an hour and a half before the game started, and we were busy until that very moment. Two intermissions meant forty minutes of more rushing. And then after the game we were still busy, but not always as busy as earlier. Fans want their gear for the game, not after.
I loved working with people, that wasn't the problem. I'm a people person, able to make conversations with almost anybody. I guess my biggest problem was the fact that I wasn't able to see a game yet. I probably knew more about hockey and the NHL than most people who had tickets. I knew the name, number and birth location of every Winnipeg Jet, I knew up-to-date stats about players in the NHL, I just figured I deserved to see a game every now and then. But I just couldn't afford it. I had to pay for school, my phone bill and pay for things that most 19 year olds have to pay for. I lived with my parents, so I didn't have to pay for rent or food or anything. But even then, I still couldn't really afford to go to a game. And I didn't want to go alone. Who likes to go to games alone? There was no way I could afford TWO tickets to a game, let alone one. So the closest I got to going to a game, was working at them. It sucked, but I loved my job, and at least I got to hear the game.
But, that all changed at one specific game.
