Day off

Veronicas POV

I abruptly awake to a beeping alarm, and I groan wishing someone would shut it off. I push myself up with my elbow so I'm sitting up, which hurts like hell. The alarm reads 6:30.

"What's going on?" I mumble.

"I'm so sorry!" Heather apologizes, quickly rushing over to switch it off, " I always get up early so I have plenty of time in the day."

She's already dressed for the school day, and I give her a puzzled expression.

"Why are you already dressed?" I ask her, "I though neither of us were going today?"

"I'm not," she answers, "can't I just get ready for the day?"

"It's just early," I lay back down, and rub my eyes, "So what did you do all day yesterday?"

"Well, after you fell back asleep, I just went on with my day," she listed off things on her fingers, "Read, studied, ate, watched tv, just the usual stuff."

"Speaking of which, you must be starving," she adds, "do you want me to get you something to eat?"

"I can get something myself," I insist, "just help me out of bed, and I can get it myself."

She carefully helps me out of bed, and I stand on my feet, wobbling a bit. I take a few steps, and so far so good. I slowly walk out the door, and look around the hallway. Heather walks out with me, and I follow her downstairs into the kitchen.

She makes me a bowl of cereal, and we both sit down at the table.

"So, did you call Mac to ask her if she can check whether or not JD is at school?" I ask between bites of cereal, "if we don't ask her before school, she won't think to pay attention to him, and won't remember if he was in class or not."

"I'll call her in a bit," she answers, "she's never up before 7."

We eat our cereal in silence, and once it's a bit after seven, we both go into the living room to grab the phone. I pick it up, and dial Heathers number.

"Hello? Who the hell's calling this early?" She responds, with her voice slow, and groggy.

"This is Veronica, I just had a favor to ask."

"Well couldn't you just wait to ask me at school? It's way too early for this."

"Well, no, not really," I reply, "I'm not coming to school today. And neither Is Heather."

"Oh?" She asks curiously.

"Since JD is in your American history class, I need you to see if he's in class today, and let us know if he is.

"Did you guys get into a fight? Or did you two break up?" She bombards me with questions, "and why is Heather staying home too? What's going o-"

I quickly cut her off not wanting to tell her anymore than I have to, "we're just going through some stuff right now, and I just need to know if he's at school."

"Alright, I can check for you," She answers, "but next time call me a bit later."

With that she hangs up, and I smile knowing that everything is going well.

"You forget to ask her to pick up our homework for the day!" Heather points out.

I reassure her, "We'll be fine, it's just one day. We can miss one day of school."

"Well, as long as we don't just sit around watching tv all day, I guess we'll be fine."

I start to walk up the stairs to go get dressed, but stop halfway up.

"Shit."

"What's wrong?" She asks, "do you need me to get you more Tylenol?"

"No, it's just I don't have any of my stuff. Like my clothes or school books, or my diary, or-"

Heather cuts me off, "we can just go pick up some of your stuff, it's no big deal."

"But my mom is gonna be there," I complain, "she got back the morning after we left."

"Well," she pondered about what we could do for a moment, "you could just borrow some of my clothes, and I'm sure I have spare note books you can use."

"But what about my diary!?" I exclaim, "how else am I supposed to get my thoughts out of my head and keep them in one place?"

I walk back over to the kitchen table to pick up my bowl and bring it to the sink.

"We can go over there at night while she's asleep!" She suggests with enthusiasm, "we can grab some of your stuff, and head right back before she even notices."

"So I break into my own house?" I sarcastically ask her.

"I mean, that's one way to put it."

I head back up to her room, and go through her closet, which is rather big compared to mine. I pick out a black skirt, and a plain purple and white striped t-shirt. I struggle to get the skirt on without bending too much, but I eventually get everything on. It's simple, but it makes me feel productive, and hey, Its not like I'm going anywhere.

I walk back downstairs, and Heather is sitting on the couch watching the black cauldron.

"I called your mom while you were getting dressed to tell her you were on a school trip," Heather informs me, "and get this; she didn't question a thing!"

"Wow. I didn't think she'd just believed you," I think out loud to myself. I guess being my moms favorite really helps her out.

"I though you said we weren't going to use our day off to just watch tv all day?" I question her, as I take a seat on the couch next to her and nudge her arm, "I also didn't think this was your type of movie."

"First of all, we deserve to take a break and watch tv for a while, and second, this might not be my usual type of movie, but it's underrated as fuck, and it's not like most other Disney movies."

"Whatever you say," I joke, "it's still a kids movie."

"Fuck you," she adds on focusing her attention back on the screen, "I don't care, it's still a great movie."

I get up from the couch to go grab an icepack from the freezer. I bring it over to the couch, gently holding it again my side, and sit back down on the couch. I sit and watch the rest of the movie with her, and towards the end, she's laying her head beside my leg. I rub her back with my stiffly wrapped hand, while we finish the movie.

Once the movie ended, Heather got up, and popped in another VHS tape, before crawling back in next to me. So much for not watching movies all day.
