One dramatic entrance from our new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher later, Dumblore continues with his speech.
"As I was saying," he smiles at the many transfixed students before him, "We are to have the honour of hosting a very exciting event over the coming months, an event which has not been held for over a century. It is my great pleasure to inform you that the Triwizard Tournament will be taking place at Hogwarts this year."
"You're JOKING!" Fred exclaims loudly. The tension in the hall breaks into laughter. Dumbledore chuckles appreciatively.
"I am not joking, Mr Weasley," he says, "Though, now you mention it, I did hear an excellent one over the summer about a troll, a hag and a leprechaun who all go into a bar-" he's cut off by Professor McGonagall loudly clearing her throat.
"Er - but maybe this is not the time. Where was I? Ah yes, the Triwizard Tournament. Well, some of you will not know what this Tournament involves, so I hope those who do know will allow me to give a short explanation."
"The Triwizard Tournament was first established some seven hundred years ago, as a friendly competition between the three largest European schools of wizardry - Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang. A champion was selected to represent each school, and the three champions competed in three magical tasks. The schools took it in turns to host the Tournament once every five years, and it was generally agreed to be a most excellent way of establishing ties between young witches and wizards of different nationalities - until the death toll mounted so high the Tournament was discontinued. There have been several attempts over the centuries to reinstate the Tournament, none of which have been successful."
He goes on to explain how the Ministry have ensured over the summer that no champion will find themselves in any kind of mortal danger, and how the two schools will be arriving with a short-list of contenders in October for the selection to take place at Halloween. Then, the atmosphere in the hall falls as Dumbledore sets the seventeen years age limits.
The twins look outraged, as they are to turn seventeen in April. I groan internally, knowing I am never going to hear the end of this. Especially since the prize is a thousand galleons. As we all stream out of the hall, the twins brainstorm ways to cheat the system and enter.
"Really guys? You think Dumbledore would choose a judge that can be fooled by a ageing potion?" They jump as my voice enters their conversation, before breaking into grins and slinging their arms around me.
"Lighten up Brin, you heard him, we'll all be fine." Fred chuckles.
"But if one of us does get chosen, you're going to have to be cheering us on. I wonder if Hogsmeade sell those muggle cheerleader outfits from that silly film you made us watch." George ponders.
"Over your dea-" recent events considered, I change my choice of words, "I'll wear one of those and cheer for you when the moon turns into a raisin and gets eaten by the Sun. And it was not a silly film."
"Whatever you say!" They chant in unison, removing their arms from my shoulders as they disappear into the Gryffindor common room.
Shaking my head with a smile, I head down to the Dungeons, tapping on the barrels and slipping into the bright Common Room. Our trunks already at our beds, everyone heads straight to the Dorms - the Common Room is deserted on the first night back, everyone too tired from the journey to stay up talking.
Changing into a short nightdress and an old hoodie, I climb under the golden-coloured covers.
"You know, apparently Cedric Diggory is thinking of entering." Hannah Abott comments. The five of us are sitting up in our beds, tired, but wanting to know more.
"Really?" Susan asks, "He's a sixth year though, will he be seventeen?"
"Yeah, his birthday is before the cut off date."
"Wow... hey, Brinley, isn't your brother in his seventh year?" Valerie Perry looks over at me, prompting the other four to follow suit.
"Yeah, I can't imagine he won't enter..." The thought strikes an uncertainty in me... It's supposedly safe, but the same was said about the Philosopher's Stone, the secret Chamber, Hogwarts itself when Sirius Black broke in.
"I won't lie, considering everything that's happened here, I'm not sure this tournament is the best idea." Alisson Kennedy adds, as though reading my mind.
"I was just thinking that..."
It's quiet for a second before Hannah says we should probably sleep, having classes tomorrow. We all make some sounds of agreement, laying down and eventually falling asleep.
