The Announcement

Transfiguration is ending, so we all start getting ready for our next class. Since the announcement of the Yule Ball two days ago, the school haven't stopped talking about it. Hermione and I haven't brought it up yet.

As the class filters out, I hang behind, debating internally. With a deep breath, I approach Professor McGonagall's desk before I can talk myself out of it.

"Yes, Miss Fern?" She looks up from her paper with a questioning gaze over the top of her glasses.

"Erm, I was just... just wondering if our dance partners, f-for the ball had to be boys..."

"There's still plenty of time left if you're worried about finding a date Miss Fern."

"N-no, not as friends... I mean, could a girl bring a girl as... as her date?"

"Oh." She sits up straighter as she comprehends what I'm saying. I nervously adjust the strap of my satchel as I wait for her reply.

"I'm sure," she starts, "That would be acceptable. I must say it isn't something we spoke about when planning this event, but I don't see why it would be a problem. I'll bring it up with the other teachers."

I nod with a small smile. Honestly, I doubt Hermione and I would end up seriously going together, but at least the option is there.

"Now, you better be off, or you'll be late for your next class."

"Thanks Professor."

The wind blows cold around us, but Hermione had the foresight to bring the blanket that's now wrapped around our shoulders.

"So Professor McGonagall said two girls could go to the ball together?"

"Well, she actually said she doesn't see why it would be a problem, but she has to talk to the other teachers first."

"If... if we can, do you want to go?"

"Maybe? Don't get me wrong, I think it'd be great. But everyone would know then. I think... if you're ready and if you want to, I think we should do it."

She goes quiet for a second before nodding slowly.

"Can I think about it?"

"Of course."

We move the conversation to our classmates.

"Well, I think Harry is going to ask Cho Chang. Viktor Krum asked me, but I said no."

"Viktor Krum? As in Bulgarian seeker Krum?"

"Don't sound too surprised."

"No, no that's not what I meant at all, I just mean he's barely glanced at a girl since he arrived, and I'm surprised he managed to get away from his fan club."

"Fair point, they did catch up to him after. Erm... Ginny asked why I said no, so I told her the truth."

"Did it go well?"

"Yeah, it did," she smiles, "She promised she wouldn't tell anyone."

"Well, that's three Weasleys down."

She laughs, and butterflies decide to dance in my stomach as I realise it's quickly becoming my favourite sound.
