Prologue

Suddenly, her arm is on the wall next to my head and she's looking down at me in concern. Her dark eyes bore into mine, determined to pull the truth out of me.

"You're not going anywhere until you tell me what's wrong."

I look to the side, unwilling to meet her sharp gaze, and shake my head.

"I can't." My voice comes out as somewhat of a whisper, but it's hardly as if I have to yell to be heard - it's the middle of the night in a supposedly locked classroom.

"Brinley..." Her voice is softer than before. She pushes a strand of my honey blonde hair away from my face, causing me to shiver as her warm fingertips brush my cheek.

"I... I just..." I sigh, deciding there's no point in hiding it anymore.

"I really like you... and it's silly because you don't feel that way and I've been acting weird around you because I get nervous and I don't really know what I'm saying but I didn't want to make things weird and I had a dream and it's not fair on you because I shouldn't think about you that way because you don't look at me like that and it's all really silly I feel like a ten year old with a crush but I can't sort my head out..."

Hermione looks down at me throughout my rambling, never cutting me off. I have no idea what she's thinking, her face is completely neutral.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Why does it matter?"

"Cos I could've been doing this weeks ago."

It takes me a moment to realise she's kissing me, but as soon as I do, I kiss her back, my arms on her shoulders. Weirdly accurate to my dream, she tastes like cinnamon and I feel a warmth break in my chest.

She pulls away after a minute, leaning her forehead against mine.

"How long have you felt that way?" She whispers.

"Since last year..."

"I wish you'd told me sooner." She starts twirling my hair around her finger as I look up at her with a small smile.

"So do I."

She laces her hand through mine and we stay there for a while, quiet, but at peace.
