The room falls under brilliant lights, and it falls onto many people. Over a couple hundred, the room is crowded and almost feels suffocating as their bodies dance in close proximity. I stood in the corner of the room, my mind paused as I held a small glass of water in my hands, I wasn’t allowed to drink anything that would cause me to be out of my certain state of mind, for fear of perverted men or women that would take advantage of the situation. I had refused the countless requests of dancing, not in the mood for such a party, nor was I in the mood to continue to have a man or woman drool over me, just for my status and wealth. My parents had thrown this ball in hopes I would find someone to marry, they, in the end, told me it didn’t matter who it was. But I felt that it was just a lie to get me to marry quicker. But a part of me knew they weren’t lying. Because my mother had not been of royal blood and had been a servant when my father was a teen. They fell in love and married soon after my fathers’ parents died.
My back had been pressed against the wall when my eyes had seen a man in the corner of my eyes, he stood next to the door with a suit and a sword on his waist, as if he was ready for the worst. His white-gloved hands rest in front of him as he stares blankly at the crowd in front of him. My heart quickens as I look at him, not fully knowing why. In a split second, I found myself walking in his direction. I stop as he turns to face me before I get too close. A small smile is on his lips. His green hair sways as he turns, falling over his forehead. One side of his hair was longer than the other, the dark green of his roots soon faded into a light green. His emerald eyes stare into my eyes.
“Is there something I can help you with, your majesty?” his voice is soothing as he speaks, almost making me swoon at the sound of it. His hands never uncrossed from in front of him but he seemed to loosen up as he spoke. Becoming a different character as he spoke.
“No, I don’t need anything, I just wanted to talk, you seemed lonely” I mutter, running one of my hands down my arm in awkwardness as I would give anything to turn back and forget this conversation happened. Talking to others wasn’t my strong point, it wasn’t something I was nearly as bad as I had thought, but I hadn’t been great.
“It’s my job to make sure the royal family stays safe, I’m a knight after all,” he says with a straight face. His hands rest on his hips as he looks back at the crowd. I took his hand in mine making him jump slightly from the contact, I had even shocked myself. But at this moment I couldn’t turn back.
“I’m sure you could take a break, dance with me”
“I really shou-” he stops in mid-sentence as I drag him to the dance floor before he could finish. His eyes are wide as he now sees the many eyes staring at us, some had been in envy as they watched royal blood take hands with a simple knight. I rest my right hand on his shoulder taking his other hand to rest in mine. A smile is on my lips but I can feel my face burning from all the eyes. But I see he is calm. His other hand rests on my waist soon taking the lead. My feet soon follow his as he and I sway in a calming motion. Around the ballroom, I hear both of our heeled shoes tap lightly on the hard floor. Others had joined around us soon I had spaced everyone else out and looked at him again
“I never learned your name,” I say catching his attention, his green eyes flash at me with a sort of emotion I can’t point out.
“My name is Barbatos,” he says, a smile paints his lips as I stared into his eyes, the green tints in his gradient eyes had caught me off guard as I slowly lost myself in them.
“I’m sure you already know me.” I sigh, saddened that I couldn’t introduce myself without anyone not knowing who I was. But a part of me was happy for the status, or else I wouldn’t have met him.
“Yes, I do. Though you are much kinder than the rumors say” he smiles his grip tightens on me, as he pulls me closer to his body. “They say you are mean because you always say no, yet I can’t see that. Though this is the first time I have met you face to face”
“You flatter me”
“I’m only saying how I feel your majesty,” he says softly hovering slightly over me.
“You don’t have to be so formal, after all. We are dancing partners now” I laugh making him blush slightly as he turns his head to the side.
“Dancing with you is like a gift I don’t deserve, just like your kindness. I’m a knight, not a prince. It is my job to treat you as a gem and so formal” his voice shakes slightly but not enough for me to notice fully. A small chuckle leaves my lips as I leave his arms pulling on his tightly fit black suit.
“Now you really are flattering me. Come on follow me” I state pulling him behind me as we leave through a doorway surrounded by stained glass. Bushes soon surrounded us as we walked further from the ballroom. The music faded from us being able to hear it.
“I’ve been here countless times before, yet I never thought I would be here with you” he chuckles pulling me closer to him. I look up at him to see a smile on his lips, a boost of confidence flows through me as I cup his cheek pulling him down to my level. Pressing his lips to mine. I feel him tense under the kiss but he soon calms down, wrapping his arms around my waist pulling me closer than I thought I could be to his body. He pulled away from me, a bright red color flashed on his face. As he looks to the ground.
“I think I fell in love when I was dancing with you” I mutter looking into his eyes again this time the stars are reflected off of his bright green eyes.
“I really loved dancing with you”
