"Pipes, we'll get caught," protested Shelley.
"No we won't! C'mon, I know what I'm doing," said Piper, making a conscious effort not to charmspeak. Sometimes she slipped into it without realising, and she didn't want to make anyone do anything they didn't want to, especially not Shel. Honesty was key, which was why Shel knew about Piper's demigodishness (of course, she was sworn into secrecy like everyone else).
"Do you, though?"
"Yeah, I've done this before," she said.
Shel smiled. "Okay, fine."
That night, they snuck onto the roof of the college, dressed inconspicuously in black and dark blue, and Piper grinned at her.
"Told you. It'll be fine, as long as we don't yell at the shooting stars or anything."
Shel laughed a little. "Okay, noted."
Piper spread a blanket and they lay down next to each other, Piper's arm around Shel, Shel playing with Piper's hair. They stared up at the sky.
"It's so beautiful, even before the meteor shower starts," whispered Shel.
"I know. My grandfather used to say that the Cherokee people believed that the stars were little flaming creatures, like hedgehogs, but the Greeks had constellations, and science says they're just balls of gas... so what are they really?" asked Piper thoughtfully.
"I don't know. Maybe they're whatever you believe they are. My mom used to say that when people die, they add a star to the sky, and as long as they're remembered, their star will keep burning brightly, but if everyone forgets about them, their star starts to die, and when no one knows their name, it flickers out."
"I like that," whispered Piper. "It makes you feel better, like you're doing something to help them, even if you couldn't help them before."
"Yeah, I know what you mean. If it's true, my mom's star is still burning. And so are all your friends' stars. I think demigods are the bridge between this world, and that world," she said, nodding up at the sky. "It's like humanity isn't alone."
"Humanity was never alone, it's just that sometimes humanity doesn't know where to look for company." The demigod slipped her hand into her girlfriend's and intertwined their fingers. Shel turned her head, and they missed the first shooting star as they locked lips under the faint light of the stars.
