"Isla, get your butt down here now! We are going to be late for school!" I shout up the stairs.

"Coming!" I hear my seven-year-old daughter shout back at me.

How many times have I heard that before? I head back into the living room to make sure that I have everything ready for the day ahead.
School bag. Check.
Swim kit. Check.
Handbag. Check.

I sigh to myself. What is she doing up there? I only sent her to brush her teeth. I roll my eyes and pace around for a minute until I finally hear her coming down the stairs. She appears in the living room and smiles sweetly at me.

"Can you get your shoes on please?" I ask her.

She nods and retreats back into the hallway. "Can Stacey come round to play tonight, Mum?" Isla calls out from the hallway.

"I will ask her mum at school." I answer her, checking my phone for the time.

We have five minutes to get to school but luckily, it's only down the road. Fortunately, my work isn't much further way either.
I own a small coffee shop down the road. I was glad that I had someone else to open the shop every morning for me, but I still didn't like to be late.
I wander into the hallway to see Isla buckling her shoe up.

"Thank you. Here's your coat and bag." I pass them to her. "Come on, let's go."

I successfully drop Isla off at school and on time, thank god, then quickly scan the playground to see Stacey's mum walking towards the gates.

"Lucy!" I call after her and rush towards her.

Lucy turns around and smiles brightly at me, "Hi, Rachel, how are you?"

"I'm good, thanks. Just quickly before I get to work; Isla asked if Stacey can come round to play tonight, if that's ok?"

"Of course. Us mums can have a chat and a wine." Lucy smiles again and nods.

"Sounds good! I better go but I will see you after school." I wave and briskly walk away.

"See you!" She calls after me.

Just before I get to work, my phone pings. I take it out of my bag and quickly check it as I walk down the street. It's a message from a guy from Tinder, 'We still on for Saturday night, babe? ;)'

Dear god, why was I going on a date with him again? Oh yeah, to have some sort of social/dating life. Being a single mum definitely was not easy and it was very lonely at times.

My relationship with Isla's dad was a whirlwind. We met after college when I had just turned 20 and we quickly fell in love. I was obsessed with him and I loved him so much.
Unfortunately, things went sour and we split before Isla was born. He was there at her birth but after that he had disappeared.
The last time we saw him was around two years ago - he showed up at the coffee shop for Isla's 5th birthday party and left pretty quickly after we got into a heated argument.

We were better off without him
