Zia was starting to panic. She wanted to use the little free time she had at her disposal and spend it with Carter. But her boyfriend was nowhere to be found.
She had searched all over the building. She looked in the library, the basketball court, the training room, the living room, his bedroom, her bedroom, his bedroom again. But he was nowhere to be found. It was like he had suddenly vanished.
"Sadie."
"Yeah?" the British blonde replied.
"Have you seen Carter?" Zia asked.
Sadie opened her mouth to answer, probably with some sarcastic remark of sorts, but then stayed silent. She frowned, confused. Her eyebrows furrowed as she reflected on the issue.
"Have you checked his bedroom?" she eventually asked.
"Yes, fifteen times! I've checked every single room in this building!" Zia answered.
She let out an exasperated sigh and ran her hands through her hair.
"Why can't I find him? What if something's wrong? What if he got attacked? What if he's been kidnapped? What if he's hurt? What if he's..."
"Whoah, woah! Slow down." Sadie said, interrupting Zia's rambling.
"Carter's the pharaoh. He's not defenseless. And anyway, he's probably just sitting with his nose stuck in a book somewhere""I've checked the library. He's not there." Zia told her.
"Have you checked the Silent Corner?" Sadie replied.
Zia frowned.
"The what?"
"The Silent Corner. It's this little alcove in the library that's almost always empty. Carter goes there when he wants to read without me interrupting him. He thinks I don't know about it." Sadie explained.
"Where exactly is it?" Zia asked.
"It's near the demon section." Sadie informed,
"Thanks." Zia said before walking off towards the library for the twentieth time that morning.
And sure enough, Carter Kane was right there in that little alcove, his attention completely directed towards a book he held in his hands.
"Carter?"
He was so focused on the book that he didn't hear her. Zia sighed before trying again.
"Carter!"
Carter nearly jumped out of his chair, dropping his book in the process.
"H-hey, Zia. I didn't see you there." he said nervously.
"I've been looking all over for you. Where were you?" she inquired.
Carter scratched the back of his head nervously. The fact that it seemed like Zia was glaring at him did not help his nerves at all.
"I, uhm... I've been here all morning, actually. Trying to read while getting away from Sadie."
Zia held the glare for another minute before dropping it and hugging Carter.
"You idiot. I was worried about you. Couldn't you have at least told me where you were?"
Carter smiled and returned the hug.
"Sorry. I was kinda in a hurry. I really needed to get these notes ready for the initiates." he explained.
Zia shook her head and laughed lightly.
"Why didn't you tell me? I could have helped you, silly."
"Okay. Wanna give me a hand?"
"Yeah! Scoot over!"
Carter laughed, moving his chair a bit to the side while Zia got another one and sat down next to him. They spent the rest of the morning either laughing or noting things down.
