Chapter 9

Crash!

I poke my head out of the palanquin and saw the mess that created that crashing noise. One guy was sprawled on the floor, glasses and trays scattered around him. He looked like he passed out.

"What happened?" I ask no one in particular and jump off the palanquin to help.

"Careful!" Se Ri sunbae warns as I almost stepped on shards of the broken glass. I then saw Bo Gyo walking out of the tent with Sun Shin on her heels.

"Just get back inside the palanquin. I'll clean this." Jimin tells me as he picks up the shards from the floor. I wasn't in proper clothes to help with serving and cleaning but everyone else were busy with the customers and cooking.

A shadow looms behind me. Then I see Jungkook. He gently pushes me aside and helped Jimin instead.

I was taken aback by what Jungkook just did. He didn't say a word but it was as if he wants me out of harm's way.

How ironic of him! Only yesterday did he carelessly shoved me that I almost tripped over when I was talking to Seokjin sunbae.

Jimin sees me standing by and so he said, "You can go back to your palanquin, Kim Dae Eun. They're looking for you. Jungkook here will help me."

"Oh? Okay." I say, staring at the back of Jungkook's head.

Sun Shin told me that Bo Gyo left already. She doesn't know if she's at the dorm or out in the grounds to pass the time.

Apparently, a drunken student was being rude to Se Ri sunbae. Bo Gyo heard the guy's sleazy comments and couldn't contain herself. She throws the tray full of unwashed shot glasses to his face, rendering him to fall on the floor. He was still conscious but because he was too drunk, he couldn't get up and eventually passed out.

I waited for the peak hour to pass before asking the others if I could step out for a short break.

"Before you do, go for a quick rounds with Jungkook." Seo Jun sunbae said. He then hands me two big placards that has our stall's name and menu in it.

"What?" It wasn't because I was unwilling to do what I was told. I was just surprised. Why Jungkook?

"He said he's gonna head out later." Seo Jun sunbae said. As I was still standing in front of him, he looks at me. I go ahead not wanting to be told twice. I then went to Jungkook's palanquin.

"Seo Jun sunbae said we should do some rounds before taking a break." I say to Jungkook, trying my best to act casual. I put one placard down and went out to do my rounds without waiting for him.

It's not like we have to do it together. He can do his rounds elsewhere.

To my utter surprise, Jungkook catches up to me, holding the placard. I look at him but he was avoiding my gaze. Then I resumed walking and he follows suit.

I sighed inwardly. This lad should be awarded as the most confusing boy I've ever met. I don't know what's running inside his head. And I don't know if he hates me, or he just doesn't give a damn about everyone.

I have a strong intuition that it's the former.

As we walk further, I notice we were walking in front of the stage of the King of Masked Singer contest.

Before I could stop myself, I said, "You're fencing man, right?"

He abruptly stops walking and looked at me with his eyes wide.

"How did you know?" He asks quietly, looking really shocked at what I said.

I laugh at the expression on his face. It was the most I could get out of that passive expression of his.
