Vera was scared, and more alone than ever. Every day was the same. Wake up, shower, eat, get tests done, sleep, repeat.

A nurse came into her room. She ignored her, blankly staring at the wall.

"I need you to be quiet," the nurse said in a rough voice.

She continued to ignore her.

"Acknowledge me if you want to escape this fucking place," the nurse said.

Vera decided she wasn't a nurse. She looked at her for the first time. She was young, but still older than Vera. There was a scar near her eye, it looked as if she had been scratched by something.

"You're gonna help me out of here?" she asked, eyes widening.

"Yes, you and another boy. Now listen carefully and do exactly what I say if you want to survive," the girl told her, "the boy will come to you, when there's a nurse with you. He's going to scratch you. Three days after that, you need to act crazy, like a Crank. They'll think you'll have The Flare. They'll send you to the city, a place with Cranks. Someone will meet you there. You got that?"

"Yeah," Vera said, nodding her head, "good that. Finally going to be out of this shucking place."

The girl looked at her strangely, "you and that boy use those same words."

Before Vera could say anything, the girl said, "remember what I told you. We'll see you soon."
