Sophie blinked open her eyes to the sound of shouting and beeps above her. She tried to move her arm, but she felt something stop her, like rope or a strap.
Once the blaring lights cleared, Sophie saw several people with pale blue and green face masks standing over her as the ceiling rushed past. She recognized one of the faces as Doctor Hesledge.
"What happened" she tried to say, but her throat hurt to try and speak, and her voice was barely audible above all the noise.
"We'll explain in a little while Sophie, we need to get you medical attention immediately if you want to live." He said, not even sparing a glance.
She tried to nod, then remembered something from the encounter. "Keefe. Is he okay."
"He will be fine. Just like you will." Someone nearby shouted something that sounded like 'anesthesia' and Elwin nodded.
A sudden panic surged in Sophie's chest. No, no sedatives like the cloth... the cave... A sudden flash came into Sophie's head, and she went back into her dreams.
🔷🔷🔷
She saw stone walls all around her, and sand that led out to miles of water.
Then she saw the cloaked figures, and.. Dex. One of the figures clapped a cloth over his mouth and he went limp.
Suddenly, someone grabbed her from behind covering her nose and mouth with a sweet smelling fabric, and everything went dark
🔷🔷🔷
Sophie sat up with a gasp as she looked around frantically for the cloaked figures.
After a while she took a deep breath, calming down long enough to take in her surroundings. She was in a hospital room. Not a cave surrounded by ocean. Where had that memory come from? It wasn't from one of her dreams, she was sure of that much. So where did she get that silly imagination from?
The door to the room swung open, and Elwin walked in. "Good, you're awake. We need to talk."
"You think?" Sophie tried to say, only to find her throat still hurt, just not quite as bad as before.
"Yes, I do, because I want to know what happened to make everyone think that explosion was a gas leak." He said, standing with arms crossed. "And why my son just happened to get caught in the crossfire."
He blames me... She thought, and another flashback shot through her mind. She stood on an elevator with Keefe, with two people standing below them. They dressed so oddly that it took Sophie a moment to realize that they were Keefe's parents Cassius and Gisela.
Her vision returned to reality, and she fell backward into her pillows. Elwin rushed to her side, handing her a cup of water. "What just happened?" He asked, and Sophie stared at him for a moment.
"You're not his father" she blurted, scrambling away from Elwin. "You're an Elvin physician, and Bullhorn isn't a nurse. He's supposed to be a banshee" what was she talking about? Where was all this coming from?
Elwin frowned. "Sophie, I don't know what you're talking about. Just take a deep breath. Just.. tell me what happened."
She shook her head, and closed her eyes. "The Neverseen, they- they- they-" all of a sudden Elwin was gone, and Sophie blinked.
The room door swung open, and Elwin walked in again. "Good, you're awake. We need to talk." Sophie frowned. What was going on.
"You think?" She said slowly.
"Yes, I do, because I want to know what happened to make everyone think that explosion was a gas leak." He said, standing with arms crossed. "And why my son just happened to get caught in the crossfire."
What the heck is going on?! Maybe this was a second chance. She just had to keep what had just happened to herself for now, and tell Keefe later.
"It was a bomb. I was helping Keefe with homework, when someone threw a brick threw the window, followed by a bomb." She wasn't planning on telling Elwin about the... other part of what had happened.
He nodded in satisfaction. "Good, do you feel okay?"
Sophie nodded. "My throat is sore, and I have a headache, but beside that I'm fine." Elwin looked down at Sophie's leg, which made her frown. "What?"
"So you can't tell?" He asked, walking over.
"What are you talking about? Tell what?"
Elwin sighed, before looking back up at her. "Sophie, the explosion cause you to loose all feeling in your legs. You won't be able to walk again."
Sophie froze, another memory coming to her. She sat in what looked like a room with glass walls, and a bunch of cots squeezed together. She sat on one of them, a cast on one of her arms with strange pins all over it. In the cot sitting next to her own was Fitz, leg in a cast, and unconscious.
"No, that's not possible..." she whispered, and saw Elwin clench his fists.
"You could have gotten it so much worse Sophie..." she could barely hear him when he spoke.
"W-what do you mean?" She asked hesitantly.
Elwin turned away, silent for a while before speaking again. "Because Keefe is in a coma, and we don't know when or if he will wake up."
