Sophie sat in the wheelchair outside Keefe's hospital room, staring at the unconscious boy inside.
Apparently, Grady and Edaline had made it out of the explosion with a few scrapes and cuts, so it had only been the two of them who had been severely hurt.
As she sat there, another memory rose to the top of her mind.. more like a feeling.
It was warm and fuzzy, and then, she thought something "okay, sleep now" and everything seemed to go... silent..
Sophie gasped slightly as she emerged from the memory, tears pricking at the corner of her eyes. What was she missing? Why was there this... alternate life in her head. It seemed so weird. So wrong. So... unbelievable.
She took a deep breath, finally getting the courage up to open the door and wheel her way into the room.
She didn't even seem to matter at the moment that she wouldn't be able to walk again. Keefe wouldn't be able to live his normal life again, and in so many ways that was way worse.
She sat at the side of the bed, staring at him for a while, when a few knocks came at the door. Sophie looked up to see Dex, Marella, Tam, Biana... ugh, and Linh and Fitz.
Reluctantly she motioned for them to come in, and they did.
No one said anything until the door was firmly closed.
"Are you okay?" Linh asked, but Sophie ignored her. She was still to angry at her, even if it was a stupid thing to be mad about right then.
"Sophie, now isn't the time to be like this... just, answer the question." To her surprise, it was Tam who had spoke. He probably meant it in support to his sister, but it helped that he of all people cared enough to ask.
"What does it look like? I can't walk. Keefe's in a coma," and I seem to be living two separate lives, one AU don't even remember. She thought "Why would I be fine?"
No one said anything about that. Biana walked over, and tried to take Sophie's hand, but she pulled it away. She didn't want anyone's support. Especially not a Vacker's.
Once again, her memory flashed to an unknown memory, one of a family portrait that displayed Biana, Fitz, their mom Della, their dad Alden, and their older brother Alvar, who had been missing for a while now. As per most of her visions, they too wore odd clothing, like they were royalty.
"Can I talk to Sophie for a second, guys?" Dex said out of no where, and everyone gave a grudging nod before walking out. Once everyone was gone, Dex turned to Sophie, an urgent look in his eyes.
"Sophie... I know this isn't really a good time, and you'll probably think I'm crazy, but something weird has been going on." Dex sat down in a chair not too from her own.
Narrowing her eyes, she rolled her wheelchair over to face him. "What do you mean?" She knew it before he even said it, because she had the same problem.
"I've been getting these weird flashes. They're like memories... but I don't remember them." Sophie's eyes widened, but before she could say anything, Dex mover to his original position across the room, and everyone else did too.
It's the same thing that happened with Elwin earlier. Sophie thought, but kept quiet.
"Maybe if there was a way inside his head we could bring him back, you know?" Marella said, and Sophie frowned for a moment.
What if there was a way. This time, something other than a memory came to mind. One word, of course she didn't know how it really applied to her and what she could do with the knowledge: Telepath.
"Let me see him alone for a second." She whispered, and everyone gave her a wary glance - a glare from Fitz, which he had no right to do - but they all filed out just the way they had before when Dex had started to realize something.
She turned to Keefe, and rolled her wheelchair closer, before reaching out and pressing two fingers on either side of his forehead.
Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath and reached out, hoping, wishing for anything.
The only things that filled her mind were the sounds of the hospital all around her. But before she could move away, she heard something. No. Someone, calling her name. It was not coming from Keefe's thoughts, but her own.
"Sophie, Sophie wake up! You have to come back Sophie! Please!" Something about the voice felt familiar. Comforting.
Then, she opened her eyes, and stared around at her parents, Grady and Edaline, sitting on their knees above her from the flowered carpet of her room. Tears ran down Edaline's cheeks, and Grady's face was stained with worry.
"What happened?" She asked quietly.
Grady and Edaline exchanged a hesitant look. Eventually Grady answered. "Sophie, your mind broke."
