"Get out" she said the minute he walked in.
"Sophie-" he started but Sophie cut him off.
"No, Get. Out. Now. I don't want to talk to you." tears sprang up in her eyes, as she remembered that moment before she woke up.
"No one. She's no one."
He sighed and turned to leave, but Elwin grabbed his arm and whispered something in his ear. Keefe nodded, glancing back at Sophie one more time before leaving.
Barely ten seconds passed before her parents and Amy came rushing in.
"Are you alright?" Her mom asked.
"I think so." Sophie wiped away the tears before she could see them. "I'm just a little freaked out. I'll be fine though." She knew it was a lie the moment she said it. She would never be fine. Not after reliving the worst day of her life.
The day he had taken the piece of them that had brought them together in the first place; the locket.
Amy frowned, clearly not convinced. "Alright. I hope you get better Sophie." Then they were gone.
A parade of friends came in next. Linh, Dexter, Marella, Biana, and Fitz. Even Tam was there, although he stood in the back the entire time.
"What happened??" Linh asked.
"I had some sort of black out. Really though, I'm fine." Sophie smiled as best as she could. She really wasn't doing too great at at lying today.
Fitz stepped forward. "Getting A concussion isn't fine, Sophie. Promise you'll be alright. Swear it."
Sophie nodded. "I swear I'll be fine. Concussions always go away, or at least they usually do from what I know." She looked to Elwin for confirmation, but he didn't say or do anything.
Fitz nodded, satisfied. Though it hurt when after that he walked out. Marella mis have noticed her look because she spoke up.
"He had something to do, don't worry" In fact. Sophie wasn't worried. Was that relief she was feeling? No. It couldn't be.
"Alright" Everyone stayed and talked for a bit longer before Elwin told them it was time to leave.
The moment everyone was gone, Elwin turned to Sophie. "I know it's not any of my business, but who was that boy, the one you told to leave?"
Sophie reached up and tugged out three eyelashes before responding. "He was my friend. It doesn't matter now. I never want to see him again..."
🔷🔷🔷
Sophie got out out of the hospital almost two weeks later. Elwin claimed the concussion had healed faster than expected, and Sophie was glad for it. Hospitals officially belonged in her nightmares.
Her mom still made her stay home from school for another week, meaning she would get a pass on exams for the middle of the year. The negative side of that meant another week without any visitors or friends.
"I'm fine mom, really" she kept telling her, but she'd just shade her head and tell her go sit down.
By the time she was allowed to go back to school, exams were over and only a week remained before winter break.
She walked up to her locker, and waved to Dex and Marella, who's lockers were only a few away from her own.
"Hey, look who made it back!" said Dex, teasingly.
"Haha, very funny." Sophie smiled anyways and opened her locker. Her morning classes went as usual, and on her way to lunch she met up with Linh, Fitz, and Biana.
"Hey guys." Sophie said.
"Hey, how are you feeling?" asked Biana.
"I'm getting really tired of people saying that, but yeah. I'm fine." They walked into the lunch room and took their seats at the usual table in the back.
That's when she looked up and saw Stina, the school bully, walk straight into Marella.
"Watch where you're going, Redek" Stina snapped.
Marella scowled and glared at Stina. "I'm not the one who wasn't paying attention. You walked into me." Stina laughed, cold and bitter, and angry.
"I always pay attention. Now beg for mercy or meet me behind the dumpster after school to get what you deserve." Sophie got to her feet to go intervene. First day back and she was already getting into a fight.
Before she could get five paces away from their table, she heard someone else speak up. "Stina, right? I've heard some things about you. Some very bad things, so I suggest you get out of here and leave this girl alone, before I make sure you get what you deserve." Sophie stared in surprise as Keefe told off Stina. The entire cafeteria had gone silent to watch. This would absolutely ruin Stina's reputation.
Stina just huffed and walked out of the cafeteria. Everyone slowly returned to their conversations, most likely to gossip about what just happened.
A few minutes later Marella walked over to sit with them, and to Sophie's dismay Keefe followed her.
"Hey guys, this is Keefe" she gestured to Keefe and sat down like it was no big deal.
"Hi! I'm Biana, and this is my brother Fitz, and these are my friends Linh and Sophie!" Said Biana.
Linh just waved. Sophie looked up and tried to smile. "Hey" they stared at each other for a moment, partially glaring and contemplating the what to do.
Biana looked between the two of them. "Do you know each other?"
They both waited for a few seconds before saying at the same time. "No" now Sophie could only hope Keefe sitting with the group wouldn't become a regular thing.
