As the cannon went off, Mateo picked up Zach's bow.
"What are you doing?" I asked him as he put an arrow in the hilt
"Well, since you have helped me kill off a few more tributes, there no reason to stay with you anymore," Mateo said. He shot an arrow in Nico's direction.
"NICO, LOOK OUT!" I screamed. Nico jumped backwards just in time, and the arrow whizzed past her head.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Nico screamed at Mateo.
"Well, only one of us can leave this arena alive," Mateo said calmly as he re-stocked his bow, "and it's going to be me."
"Run," I said, and off we flew into the woods, arrows flying past our heads. We ran as fast as we could, and could hear Mateo running behind us. The sound of the Capitol plane boomed behind us as it came to pick up the dead tributes. Mateo was catching up on us, but Nico was fast. She swerved between trees, dodged every arrow just before it hit her. I was struggling to keep up. Although I wasn't a bad runner, I was only 12, and I was running through snow away from a 16 year old shooting arrows at me. We kept running, but suddenly I tripped on a root. I fell face first into the snow, and Mateo was running up behind me.
"Riley!" Nico called towards me, and stopped running. Mateo stopped running and started aiming his bow at me. Before I could even move, Nico jumped in the way of the arrow. I heard the arrow pierce her flesh, and heard her scream with pain.
"NICO!" I screamed, and stood up and checked to see if she was ok. She collapsed to the ground, blood seeping through her shirt. The arrow lay on the ground, like she had pulled it out already. She lay there, motionless. A canon went off.
"HOW COULD YOU!" I screamed at Mateo. Grabbed my sword. He was out of arrows.
I ran towards him with my sword. I was going to kill him! He killed Nico!
"Your dead!" I bellowed as we ran through the snow. He was faster than me, but I could still see him running as we ran through the trees. Suddenly he stopped. I ran up to him and realised why. He was on the edge of a cliff, and I was blocking the only exit.
"You either jump, or I'll kill you. Your choice," I said, my voice shaking. Tears were running down my face.
"Riley, don't do this!" Mateo said, "think about Jen. if I die, she'll be devastated. She'll probably hate you for the rest of your life." I thought about this. Could I really kill Mateo? I'd known him my whole life. But he had killed Nico, and he found it pretty easy to kill me.
"Forget Jen!" I said. "This is for Nico." I lunged forwards and stabbed him in the chest. He screamed in pain. He gasped, and fell backwards off the cliff. As he hit the ground, a cannon went off. I collapsed to my knees and started sobbing. My best friend was dead and I'd just killed somebody.
The Capitol plane soon arrived and collected me. I don't know how long I slept for. When I woke up, I was back in the Capitol, and Ardonia was there.
"Congratulations," she said. "You've won." I looked at her sadly, and asked "Now what?"
"Interviews. Your stylist needs to get you ready. Let's go." the next few days were a blur. I got ready, had interviews, and was transported back to district 3. When I arrived, there was a grand celebration, and everyone seemed happy. I fake smiled for the cameras, and soon went to my new home. I walked inside, and the phone started ringing. Surprised, I picked it up and said "hello?"
"Hi Riley, this is Nico. I'm alive. I faked my death and hijacked a Capitol plane. I'll see you soon." The phone hung up.
