That day, a one of the scouts stationed at the pass came riding his horse at full speed straight to the keep to give the king Dimitry the news.

"Your grace, the heathens are close to the pass now! They are going to reach us by tomorrow afternoon."

The roman men were eager enough to kill trojans already. They were angry that one guard was killed by an assassin.

And it was then that every soldier was encouraged to go to the priests for confession. Even if Megumin might manage to shatter their morale or kill most of them, we were still severely outnumbered and the trojans might not give up so easily. Battle was still a likely scenario.

When I went to confession, I confessed every sin I committed to the priest, including the moment I stole a scabbard from the smith. After proclaiming that my sins were forgiven, the priest gave me some advice.

"For this sin I advise you give to the smith you stole from something better than the stolen item, but do so after the battle."

(Timeskip to the next day, an hour before the battle)

Clad in armor, I ran between the legionnaires that were preparing for battle and went up the hill, by the keep. That was where Megumin was stationed for the battle, a position from where she could see the battlefield and cast an Explosion on the enemy army before the battle itself begins.

Knowing that commander Cornelius was the best warrior in all of king Dimitry's army, I asked him to guard Megumin during the course of the battle from any kind of enemy that might sneak behind our lines and kill her.

I met them by the keep.

"Good morning, Y/n! Are you ready for war?" Cornelius greeted me with a roman salute

"Sure thing. I hope you don't feel like you're missing out. This arch-mage is way too important for me to lose." I said pointing to Megumin

"Hey!" Megumin blushed and looked at the ground

Cornelius chuckled.

"You must be kidding. I am actually comfortable enough not risking my skin here. As for Megumin, she is in good hands. It is the king you should be worried about." Cornelius told me

"Don't worry, I'll defend him." I said

"Y/n, I have something to give you before you go!" Megumin

"What is it?" I asked her

Megumin revealed the bloodied handkerchief she had cleaned my face with a few days ago. The blood on it was dry now. She tied it up around my arm, almost like a bandage.

"Huh? Is that...?"

"I think you already recognized it." Megumin told me. "This is my favor, given to you in hopes of bringing you luck."

"Thanks!"

I hugged her and I gave her a kiss on the cheek. Then I turned around and I started walking back to the army.

"Stay alive, Y/n! Do not disappoint me!" I heard Megumin shout

"I will not disappoint you!" I shouted back.

I descended back into the village and returned to my unit. My unit was led by Hadrian, and he marched with us on the outer edge of the forest and into the field, where the pass could be seen from a 3-kilometer distance away.

~Third Person POV~

After half an hour, the trojan army appeared out of the pass. It was marching in an orderly column and it was composed of 1100 men. In front of the column was a force of 100 pikemen made to face the enemy cataphracts, followed up by archers, crossbowmen and slingers. Behind them, at around the middle of the column began the melee infantry force, made up of people wearing all kinds of scavenged gear and weapons. The trojans were mainly led by commanders Lion, Kurt and the Weirdo.
