I moved the body of my deceased enemy off the road. I found a little food on him and an extra hammer I could use to trade for something else when we reached Ghoulparadise. Then we were back on our way.

I can't do it, I can't, I can't! But I must leave her at the hamlet. It is for her sake. The world is too dangerous.

Megumin went right behind me and must've noticed my state.

"Why are you brooding again, Y/n?" she asked me

"I-it is nothing." I said. "I'm still a little agitated from that fight, he he"

I scratched the back of my head and attempted my sincerest smile. Megumin was walking beside me by now.

"What do you think it is going to be inside the hamlet?" Megumin asked

"I have no idea. Me and father stood away from whatever remained of civilization."

We were now leaving the forest and climbing up the hill. Megumin asked me something else.

"Didn't the loneliness after your father left you make you sad?"

I could feel my heart pounding heavily.

So. She doesn't miss, huh? There is no point in lying.

"Yes. Trusting anyone in this world is dangerous and I didn't know Jack was so nice." I answered

"But you did trust me pretty quickly, though."

I could feel my cheeks turn to red. I looked at Megumin, expecting a smug smile. Instead I was met with an adorable, sincere smile of what seemed like... gratitude?

 gratitude?

"Yes." was all I could respond to that.

What was she grateful for? Hasn't she heard what I told Jack earlier about leaving her at Ghoulparadise after beating up the ghouls? Does she think I was lying to him back then? How can I betray that beautiful smile? I need to tell her.

Just as we reached the top of the hill and we could see the hamlet in the distance, Megumin sped up her pace, going in front of me and pointing towards the village.

"Hey look! It is right there!"

I extended my hand and put it on her shoulder to slow her down.

"Megumin, I need to tell you something." I said

Megumin turned around, a curious look on her face.

But then I heard the sound of brushing coming from a nearby bush, I turned towards it and two survivors armed with crossbows pointed their loaded weapons at us.

"Halt! Who goes there?"

Me and Megumin stopped and I took the initiative to greet them.

"I am Y/n son of F/n and I came here to help you people with your ghoul problem!"
