Post-apocalyptic explosions (Reader x Megumin story)

Chapter 3-Scavenging

"You won't regret forming a party with me!" Megumin told me

I certainly hope you won't eat as much as you ate last time. Otherwise, having a walking nuke beside me will certainly be helpful.

The sun had already set and it was nighttime by now. Meanwhile, I went to a nearby well to take some water and pour it into two glass bottles. I brought these bottles back into the shed to a welcoming Megumin when the sun had set.

Now we were both drinking water. Megumin was sitting on a pile of clothes and I was sitting in the chair.

"You seem very eager to join a party." I pointed out

"That was what I was about to do when I was transported into this world." Megumin said

"Ah, I see."

I let out a yawn. I was exhausted and I must've been awake for a lot of time by now.

"Megumin, stand up and get off that pile of clothes." I told her

"Why?" Megumin asked.

"Just do it."

Megumin stood up and I took half of the clothes and made an improvised bed for myself. Then I laid on it. She chuckled and covered her mouth when she saw and understood why I told her to stand up.

"Have a good night." I told her

"You too." she replied

I quickly fell asleep and I started dreaming. I was in some sort of school cafeteria. But it was empty. The classes must've been over for the day. There was a large container behind the counter where bread crusts were disposed of, and there seemed to be many of them inside. Then I saw a girl in a pink school uniform sneaking her way into the cafeteria and behind the counter. In her hand was a bag and she chewed on two bread crusts as she put more and more bread crusts inside the bag.

As I realized the girl was actually Megumin, the dream ended. Damn, I wonder if what happened in this dream was real. Although, in this world, scavenging for bread crusts is sane at this point.

I woke up. I stood up and looked at Megumin. She was sleeping peacefully with her hat and staff by her side. She's got quite a curious but cute hair.

Hunger was settling in on me since I woke up. I sat on the chair and kept looking at her. How come she is so comfortable to sleep at someone else's place without any suspicion.

I turned to face the icon of Christ on the east wall. I whispered a short prayer.

"Lord, if this is to be my companion, I humbly thank You for giving me company and I ask for You to guide my step and hand. Amen."

I continued to keep watch over Megumin's sleep. After some time, I saw her eyes gently open up.

"Good morning" I greeted my fellow party member
