Chapter 5-First piggyback ride and a mansion

My eyes opened slowly and I found myself alone inside the truck's cabin. I looked to my right, and Megumin wasn't there. I immediately suspected a theft-and-run.

Did she just...?

But then I looked at the car's side view mirrors and saw Megumin waiting outside for me to wake up and get out. I felt guilty for judging her so harshly too quickly. When I wore my backpack again and took my assault rifle on my shoulder and I went out of the cabin. Megumin  moved her hair a little and greeted me.

"A new day has begun and the sun shines on the continuation of our legend! Are you ready for the day?"

She said that in such a hopeful an chuuni way, I felt even worse for having to leave her in the future.

This is so tough. Should I let her stay with me?

"Y/n?"

"Ah, yes. I am ready for the day, let's go!"

I grabbed the shopping cart that carried our supplies but my advance was stopped by Megumin yet again.

"You forgot to take your blanket!" Megumin brought to my attention

"Oh. I almost forgot about it."

I climbed back up into the truck and took the blanket, walked back to the cart and put it inside. Only then did I and Megumin continue on our walk on the road towards Jack. Megumin looked at me with a worried look on her pretty face.

"Y/n? Are you feeling well?" Megumin asked. "You seem a little off."

"O-oh, it is nothing. Didn't sleep very well last night, that's all." I excused myself

If only you knew what's going on in my head. Actually, scratch that, you'd better not know.

But Megumin smiled.

"So it seems you are the one who is not used to sleeping on car seats!" Megumin declared. "You thought I was going to fail at this and yet I slept like a log, while you were staying up. I have defeated you!"

"Huh?" I was confused

"You heard me right. I defeated you at sleeping on car seats, which proves I am the better adventurer!" Megumin finished

Her enthusiasm made me chuckle.

"Suuure" I said. "If people saw you talk like that, they would think we are some fools."

Megumin's chuuniness chased all the dark clouds inside of my mind away.

Now is not the time for worries! That comes later.

Megumin widened her arms and raised her head to look at the sky. We were surrounded by woods, and the road we were walking on was in the middle of them.

"People? Where?" Megumin asked. "We are all alone here."

The way she whispered the all alone here part sent shivers down my spine. When I looked at her, I saw the way predatory way her red eyes glowed with intent, looking at me. But I quickly regained my emotional footing.

"You're a crazy little girl, aren't you?" I asked.

"Little... girl?" Megumin looked down at the ground and put her eyepatch on.

The tone of her voice changed. She was suddenly sad.

Ooh, come on! What have I done wrong this time!?

At some point we got outside of the forest and entered the fields again. Far away, we could see a radio tower which was clearly of no use anymore. Megumin smiled and her visible eye became eager again. She moved a little closer to me and brushed her shoulder against mine, slightly pushing me.
