SNOWBALL

DECEMBER 1984

The Snowball dance, the day I was waiting all year to go with Mike Wheeler. He promised me. I put all my trust in him.

My mom purchased a plain light blue dress with black shoes and a white necklace. I felt so pretty for once.

I reached the gym at school and entered. I saw that all of the party was with someone. Max with Lucas, Will with a random girl I've never seen before, and Dustin with Nancy. Mike was sitting on a fold-out chair waiting for someone.

Turns out that someone wasn't me. "Hey Mike, are you ready?" I asked him. "Y/n...promise you won't get mad?" he said. I was confused.

"What is it?" I said, slightly adjusting my uncomfortable dress.

"I'm actually waiting for some El. I'm so sorry, El just came back and I want to make this night special for her." This had to be a joke right? I just stood there with that feeling you get when you're about to cry.

"But-" I didn't even try to finish. I turned my face the other way so Mike couldn't see that I was about to cry.

"Y/n, you know I didn't mean it like that." He exactly meant that.

I didn't even hear what he said next. I ran out again for the second time Mike has made me miserable.

I sat outside on the sidewalk, sobbing in my dress, basically ruining it.

I cried for a good 5 minutes until I decided to go home. After that day it was winter break where my parents decided to go to California. Before I left, I called Max telling her everything and to tell everyone that I'm leaving.
