i was to drained for any vampire speeding, and i enjoyed the fresh air on my skin. i decided to just call kol and hope for a reply, but when i reached in my pocket for my phone, i remembered i had left it on the table where i was painting with klaus. debating for a few minutes, i decided to apparate to their house instead of spending an hour and a half walking like a human. with a loud crack, i apprated in the art room. grabbing my phone, i saw a missed call from kol, and multiple texts.kol: i'm walking around the town. it's rather peaceful at night
kol: portable music is such a lovely invention. i want to dance with you again.
kol: i hope you are not upset at me, darling. i was just angry.
kol: elena called me. she wants a truce.
kol: i don't think there's going to be a truce.
kol: don't be mad dear.my heart slowly sank as i saw the last few messages, sent about a minute ago. just as i was about to call him, klaus called me.
"klaus, what's-"
"get to the gilbert house, now! they're trying to kill kol." he growled angrily, and i inhaled sharply.
"klaus, he still has the stake on him." all previous fatigue i had disappeared as i sped out of the house, panicking.
"i know." he said, and i hung up, running faster. i reached the house as i heard a yell from kol, and i kicked open the door, only to be stopped by a barrier. after all this time, i still wasn't invited in. i had a clear view from the kitchen, and i screamed as i saw elena toss the stake to jeremy.
"NO!" i yelled, and i made eye contact with kol just as the stake plunged into his chest.
"i love you." he said faintly.
his body erupted into flames.
i let out a scream, banging on the barrier as elena looked up at me in horror.
"LET ME IN JEREMY! LET ME IN!" i was on my knees, sobbing. "i don't CARE about you two right now, just let me be with kol! NOW!" he didn't say anything as i cried, looking shocked. i faintly heard klaus yelling behind me, but my focus was solely on the burning body of my boyfriend. i barely registered falling into the house as jeremy let us in, instead speeding directly to kol. i reached a shaky hand out, and fell back as i saw the ash covering my finger.
at some point, bonnie had showed up, trapping klaus in the living room. the gilberts had left, leaving the house vacant to only me, klaus, and the remains of kol.
"brit?" klaus whispered brokenly as i shook silently, tears flowing down my face. i didn't answer. i couldn't answer. i felt no emotion other than drowning sadness, fiery anger, and bitter regret.
"i didn't say i love you back." i whispered. "he said it. right before he burned." i was still huddled in the kitchen corner.
"he knew you loved him." klaus tried to reassure me. but it was no good.
i slowly shut my eyes as i let myself transfigure into my animagus for the first time in a long time, a wolf with almost shining silver fur. i slowly trudged next to klaus, who silently opened his arms with no questions, letting me rest on his chest.
after an hour in my wolf state, i changed back.
"it's called an animagus. it was a long process, and i'm glad i was a good animal, not a bloody beaver or something." i explain in a hollow voice before he asked. "klaus?" he hummed in acknowledgement. "what am i supposed to do? i just lost the love of my life." i teared up again, looking over at the ashes. "he's gone. i barely got him back." i couldn't take my eyes away from his remains.
"you have to deal with it somehow." klaus said. "kill the gilberts?"
"you and i both know i don't kill." i said. "i have a better idea."
"what is it?" klaus asked, but i didn't respond. i was going in my own mind, trying to find that switch.
"brit, no." it was too late. i opened my eyes, and there was no more crushing sadness. just emptiness. i wasn't happy, but i wasn't upset. i was just there.
"that's better." my voice was monotone, and klaus looked disappointed. i walked to the kitchen, where i grabbed a few things. i came back to the living room and sat cross legged on the floor. i set the cooking pot down, and threw multiple different glass and ceramic cups and plates in it, making them shatter.
with a focused stare on the broken shards in the pot, i lifted my hands, aiming them at the mess. i felt the heat grow as they started to blaze a fiery red, melting. after it successfully melted, i lifted the molten mass in the air, crafting it into a beautiful container and lid. after i cooled it down, i put it on the ground next to the ashes. i stayed silent during the whole process, and klaus just watched.
i lifted my hands again, and guided the ashes into the container. once it was full, i covered the lid and whispered a spell, sealing it.
"the sun is rising." i noted dully, watching it through the window.
"it is. that means two more days, and i'll be free to kill again." klaus said.
"i'm leaving." i stood up, holding the container gingerly. "do not try to find me ever again, unless it's beyond urgent. i'm leaving this goddamn place behind forever." my voice betrayed no emotion while i said that, my blank stare meeting klaus' sad one.
"brit..."
"this was the last straw. it's over, klaus. i'm done. i have no emotional attachment to this town anymore. i'm free." and with that final statement, i made my exit from the house, throwing my phone into a random trash can nearby.
i went to my house, packed whatever i needed, and put it in a smaller bag in the back of my car. with one last look at the house i called my home here in mystic falls, i imagined the flames that covered kol's body, rising and spreading so fast that he was gone in a matter of seconds.
with a blazing house fire behind me, i got into my car, and drove out of mystic falls, virginia.
i am the original heretic, and from this day on, i would be sure that everyone who i encountered would remember me.
