Chapter 14

Evermore elixir is made up, everything written about it in this chapter is false.

Matt and Jeremy decided to make sure the area was safe, leaving Kassie and elena to explained everything to alaric. It was hard for them to watch as their guardian began to understand what this meant for him. The tomb where they stood was deathly silent, nobody dared make a noise. Kassie had tears forming, eyes trained to the floor.
"Damon's here." Jeremy said, disturbing the quiet as he walked in "And Klaus took Esther's body"
"Does he know about the stake?" Alaric asked, Kassie felt some tears run down her face.
"No, only that she tried to turn you into a weapon and failed." Jeremy asked, kassie had to press her fist to her mouth to stop a small sob "What's going on?"

"Listen Jeremy, I'm not gonna complete the transition." Alaric said softly, stepping towards the boy "My dark side was dangerous enough as a human. I can't be a vampire."
"So, what we're just gonna lock you in here and let you die?" The boy asked "No, no we can't!"
"Listen, Jeremy, it's the right thing to do, okay? After everything that's happened, after all that I have done. Maybe I had it coming." The man sighed and this pushed Kassie over the edge, Alaric called for her but she was already out the gate.

Outside the tomb all their friends had gathered. Candles were dotted around the ground illuminating the area. When kassie came walking out, everyone looked up. Many had faces that Kassie knew too well. this was not happening, she was not loosing another person. Her eyes met Damon's, he immediately knew what she needed and opened his arms. Kassie felt the warmth as he tightly wrapped his arms around her back and her head. She wasn't going to let go, not yet, because he made her feel safe and right now safe is what she needed.

After a little while damon tapped her back a little and bent down so he could whisper in her ear.
"You wanna say goodbye?" Kassie nodded into his chest and turned to see Elena walk out of the tomb, Alaric following her. Elena walked to Stefan and he wrapped an arm around her. Kassie detached herself from damon and walked over to Alaric.
"Hey kid" he said sadly, Kassie wrapped her arms around him "I'm sorry"
"I'm sorry too" kassie whispered "I'm going to miss you"
"Me too kass" he replied. Meredith was crying and Alaric teared up at the sight. Kassie walked back over to damon, the latter putting an arm around her shoulder and pulling her close. The group watched as Alaric went back into the tomb, closing the gate behind him.

Kassie didn't stick around. Instead she ran into a random part of the forest away from everyone else, away from everything. She didn't want anyone to find her, she knew she wouldn't be good company and she didn't want to put anyone in a worse mood. Finding a clearing that was at a good distance away. She screamed. A blast of energy ripples through the trees making them sway. Kassie collapsed to her knees, the broken twigs and various spiked plants dug into her knees and palms but she didn't care. The emotional pain of loosing yet another person close to her was far outweighing the physical pain.

When kassie's sobs calmed down into more choked breathing she laid down on her back. The trees above her had grown apart allowing her to gaze at the dark night sky that was littered with glowing balls of light. It was almost ironic that people wished on stars, as at the point you look at them they are most likely dead and have been for thousands of years. After thinking about Alaric for a while another thought came to mind. What would happen to elena, Jeremy and her? Maybe elena could take care of them, she was basically their mum already, but she wasn't yet old enough to legally adopt them. If anyone found out that Alaric was dead they'd be taken into foster care. Most likely split up.

Maybe kassie could convince damon to become their temporary guardian. As if he'd actually agree to that. He had the room. He was the right age. Was he responsible? Well....they'd have elena and Stefan for that. Why did life have to be so hard? Kassie shivered, pulling her jacket, which damon has brought her, closer around her body. But what if it was her fault?
