The moon was high and full, even more so than it had been the night before, dipping the lawn into a tranquil glow which touched the tips of their noses and accentuated the sweaty sheen on their cheekbones, made their heads feel light and giddy, their heartbeats in sync despite the electricity that each other's closeness had brought throughout the week.
They were laid out on the blanket in the back yard again, Izzy's head resting on Alex's stomach as he stroked his fingers lazily through her hair, gazing up at the sky with half closed eyes. He didn't attempt to unknot the thick curls, just danced his finger tips over them absent-mindedly.
Alex was at peace, thought he could get used to this, especially with the weight of the alcohol they'd consumed at dinner which had clouded their judgement, made both of them evidently desperate for the other's touch. Accentuated by the way they'd slept beside each other the night before, Izzy was far more relaxed around him than he'd ever seen her, warmer, closer, there were even a few hums of appreciation as he stroked her hair which she wouldn't usually have let slip. The thought of that joy and glimmer of hope being shattered the next morning when she was due to leave him singed his heart.
"Last night," Alex drawled, his lip twitching as he followed the path of a plane across the midnight blue sky with his eyes.
"Last night," she huffed back, shifting her head slightly on his stomach, moving enough into him so that she could study the sharpness of his jaw through the dark if she focused hard enough, but not too far so that he'd stop the entrancing patterns against her head with his fingertips and thumb.
"Yeh dun't wanna leave meh, do yeh?" he chuckled, wary of her eyes suddenly on him even without moving.
Izzy laughed tipsily. "You don't want me to leave," she quipped back.
"No, I fookin' dun't..." he stated quickly, sighing. He smoothed his thumb slowly over her temple and spoke before he could stop himself. "Dun't go, Izz," he quietly pleaded, whispering upwards to the sky.
Izzy swallowed hard. The sentiment in his deep voice had her desperate to look at him, to make sure he was okay, to assure him that whatever happened, things would work out, so she lifted her head from his chest and sat up slowly. "I wish I didn't have to," she whispered. "But you've got to go too."
Alex sat up when she spoke, blinking and frowning, his brow furrowed with discomfort. They shared a look, each hung on the closeness of the other and how that would soon be gone. Dissatisfied with the melancholic expression on his face, Izzy leant forward and gently poked the corner of his lip upwards into a lopsided smile, the action effortlessly prompting a genuine feeling of momentary elation inside him and then the smile twitched into a yawn shaking through his entire body which he couldn't suppress.
"Shall weh 'ead teh bed, darlin'?" he mumbled, eyes sleepy, brain clouded with all the feelings he still hadn't managed to sort through.
"You sneaking in tonight as well?" she asked teasingly, blinking slowly.
"Not if yeh invite meh first..." he chuckled, leaning forward to tuck a stray curl back behind her ear.
The predictable smirk made her roll her eyes. "Come on then," she hummed. "Seeing as it's you..."
Izzy stood as gracefully as her intoxicated state would allow and held her hand out for him, waiting for him to scramble to his feet, bunch the blanket under his arm and clasp her hand eagerly. She pulled him towards the house, her head heavy against his shoulder and she didn't think twice about how she wanted him to hold her again, wanted to feel the delicate touch of his fingertips on her skin beneath the thin sheets.
She let go of his hand as he folded the blanket and turned away from her, the image before her very much a reflection of the night before. She studied the muscles in his back beneath the white shirt, the way they strained beneath it and drew attention to his hidden strength, traced her gaze shamelessly down to the curve of his ass, the firmness of his thighs, then realised that he was turning around and had caught her studying him.
