fourteen 🪐 vending machine

you stood up against the vending machines near the gym during your lunch break.

it was just like any other day at karasuno high-school; every student was tired and completely unmotivated since break had just ended, and there really wasn't much going on.

you spent your break scrolling mindlessly on your phone.

"hey." you heard a familiar voice speak out to you. you lifted your head.

"hey, tobio." you smiled softly at the taller boy, slipping your phone into your back pocket. kageyama walked swiftly over to the vending machine, slipping his yen inside the insert.

you peaked over from beside him. "whatcha getting?"

"milk, of course. do you want one?" kageyama pressed the button for plain milk on the vending machine. you cringed teasingly.

"no thanks. but plain again? seriously?"

"you know i don't like flavored."

"yeah, but still." you watched kageyama bend down to pick up the carton of milk that fell from the machine. he tore the straw from the plastic then poked it into the box.

"i guess it does suit you." you added as he took a sip.

"suit me?" kageyama gulped.

"yeah, plain boy drinking his plain milk." you reached forward to fix the collar on your boyfriend's school uniform. you watched as his shoulders eased with your touch.

"i'm not plain." kageyama looked down with a sluggish smile, watching as you messed with the fabric of his shirt. "when's the last time you've even had regular milk?"

"don't remember." you backed away from the boy, flashing him a teasing smile. "it won't be any time soon, though."

"um... kageyama-kun... is that you?" the voice of a girl spoke unexpectedly, catching the both of you off guard. kageyama turned around to face her.

"er, im sorry, who are you?" kageyama squinted down at the unfamiliar figure with a confused expression on his face. she stood slightly shorter than you, short brown hair and petite figure.

"oh! i'm sorry.." the brunette girl apologized as she noticed you standing next to the ravenette. you clutched onto his right arm. "i'm rin, rin hayashi, from that new years party. i don't think you remember, its okay."

you watched kageyama's eyes widen with her words. "oh-! i remember you. i didn't know you went to karasuno." the boy crumpled his empty milk box, squeezing it in his fist. "yeah. you gave me that one drink."

"about that." rin breathed in, hesitating with her next words. you furrowed your eyebrows down slightly as you recalled the events of new years night. when kageyama had gotten drunk.

you had never found out who had given kageyama that drink, but you'd never assume someone as gentle as rin did.

but that didn't stop you from wanting to cuss her out right then and there; after all, she was technically the reason that whole argument had occurred in the first place. you kept your composure regardless, listening to what she had to say.

"i'm actually, really sorry about that!" rin glanced at your bothered face, looking away soon after out of fright. "when tanaka-senpai yelled at me, i was really scared.. i didn't know it was your first party, and that you didn't want to be drinking! i'm really, really sorry."

"it's okay, really." kageyama glanced down at you, then back up at the speaking girl. he didn't really seem like he wanted to be dealing with this situation at the moment, especially since the two of you were just happy a few seconds ago. "as long as you don't tell coach ukai about it, we should be good.."

"er, about that too." rin scratched the back of her neck, awkwardly looking up at kageyama.

"KAGEYAMA TOBIO. GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE BEFORE I KICK YOU OFF THIS DAMN VOLLEYBALL TEAM!" you heard coach ukai yell, gym door flying as he swung it open abruptly. perfect timing.

you let go of kageyama's arm. "go away now. you've done enough."

"y/n, its okay." kageyama placed a hand on your shoulder to calm you, but deep down you knew he agreed. rin gulped as you stepped away from her.

that lucky girl— if kageyama wasn't there, who knows what would've happened.

"ill be back, i guess." the ravenette sighed as he walked over to the gym in defeat. rin spat out one last 'im sorry!' before quickly running off, leaving you by the vending machines all alone.

"great." you muttered under your breath in annoyance, leaning your back up against the vending machine once again.

what did that girl tell coach ukai?

would tobio really get kicked off the team for something so stupid?

why did that girl give tobio the drink in the first place? she never even answered that!

you exhaled at your thoughts; irritated at the fact that this situation needed to be carried on. everything was already solved and situated, so why did that rin girl need to bring it all back? you pulled out your phone from your back pocket, needing a way to distract yourself.

you didn't want to think about it anymore.
