We were back in Vancouver for about a week before everyone started noticing a difference. Erynn couldn't stand to look at Owen or Tori at rehearsals, which led Charlie to request we stay home until it blew over. Dad had taken a few days off shooting to spend time with me.
"I know it's hard baby, I know," he soothed as I sobbed in his arms. Devin sat on the couch next to me, rubbing my back and drinking his beer. "You can say it you know," I whispered to him, wiping the tears out of my eyes with a dry laugh.
"Say what?" He took a swig of his drink, wrapping his arm around mine. "You can say I told you so. You were right, he broke my heart before it even became his to break." A fresh wave of tears fell from my eyes as I thought of him kissing another girl. Devin tapped my leg encouragingly.
"What kind of brother would I be to say something like that," he chuckled, a poor attempt at lightening the mood. I turned back to dad, pulling him into a tight hug as I sobbed.
"Emmie, c'mon drink some water baby. I gotta go back to set today, are you up for coming? Booboo wants to see you," he rubbed my back as Devin did, one hand playing in my hair like he used to.
I sighed, nodding as my chin quivered. I could do this, right? I think...
Devin passed me another one of his sweaters, laughing about how it was the only one left because Sav had them all. I gave him a weak smile as I slipped it on, pulling the hood up and letting a few pieces of my hair out.
The three of us made our way to set in my car. Dad decided to drive seeing as I had had shaky hands for the past week. "If you need to leave, Devin has the spare set still, okay?" Dad assured us as we found a parking spot next to Charlie's Subaru behind the large building.
We walked around to the front as I admired the museum we were outside of. I looked to the group of people, my hand clasped in Devin's in a very tight grip. He let me go as Savannah approached us, smiling happily. "Em! I haven't seen you since you got back. Are you okay?" I pursed my lips and shook my head. She pulled me in for a tight hug and whispered in my ear.
"You'll be okay babe, you deserve way better anyway." I nodded, biting my lip to keep more tears from spilling. Today, Dad wanted to film Booboo and Owen in the museum. Luckily, I couldn't see Owen around right away, which meant I had time to work up the nerve to see him.
Dad rushed me over to the tent where his director's chair sat with monitors and soundboards. He sat me down in the corner, much like the time we sat here for the skateboard scene in the park.
Erynn walked into the tent shortly after we had, jumping slightly when she noticed me. "Wow it's so dark in here I didn't notice Em, you look like shit by the way." I smiled sarcastically at her before looking back down at my book.
I clutched it hard and tried to focus on reading as Owen's voice came through the speakers. "You know what? I don't think this is about the art. I think you just like breaking the rules." I looked up as he spoke, watching him stand in front of the doors to the museum.
All I could think about was our trip to the art gallery, and how interested he was to learn everything I knew. I sighed as the memory played out in my head. The ghost of his touch still lingered on my hand as I recalled how he held it tightly.
My eyes flickered down to the chain wrapped around his neck, my heart dropping as the memory of the metal cooling my skin once again enveloped my mind. I turned to look at dad, my eyes watery as I stared at the screen in front of him. Erynn grabbed a tissue and handed it to me.
I blew my nose as Owen and Booboo picked up the bench and dragged it across the museum. Erynn held my hand in hers for encouragement. Dad called cut and walked out to speak with everyone. The blonde girl squeezed my hand once again before walking out to see Charlie.
