7:30 A.M; that's the time Adam gets up every single morning. That gives Shiro and Hope almost an hour and a half to make everything perfect. The two were exhausted, but they were not going to let that get in the way of making Adam the best birthday breakfast he's ever had. There was just one problem that stood in their way: neither of them knew how to cook. Hope, being five, wasn't going to help this situation either, but that wasn't going to stop them.
Shiro and Hope walked to the kitchen as quietly as possible. Shiro grabbed the pancake and put Hope down on the counter. Shiro and Hope examined the box carefully, making sure not to miss any steps.
"This should be easy enough! All we need to do is add water."
"And sprinkles! Papa loves sprinkles!" Shiro chuckled, grabbing a bowl and measuring cup. The two made the pancake mix no problem, minus Hope spilling a little bit of water. All they needed to do now was-
"Wait daddy we need sprinkles!" Hope remembered, almost jumping off the counter. "Be careful love, I'll get them right now." Hope settled back down, pushing her messy hair back behind her ears.
"I don't really know how much of this we're supposed to add."
"Let me pour!" Shiro handed Hope the sprinkles, instantly realizing his mistake. "Wait, don't put too much ok? Just a little bit." Shiro held Hope's hand as she poured in the sprinkles. "Now for the hard part."
Shiro grabbed the pancake box and read off how he was supposed to go about making these. Hope sat and watched, knowing she was going to be no help. Shiro grabbed a frying pan and turned the stove on.
He poured the mix onto the pan, careful not to add too much. "Who says I can't cook? I'm doing a pretty good job!" Shiro attempted to flip the pancake with a fork because he knew he was not nearly good enough to actually flip the pancake. To his surprise, the pancake wouldn't flip, it just crumbled and started to burn. Hope looked over watching her father struggle.
"Daddy, it smells bad." Hope complained not knowing what else to do. "I know sweetheart, I'm trying to figure it out," Shiro explained, trying his best not to lose his cool. After a bit of struggling, Shiro flipped the crumbled up pieces of pancake and cooked it to the best of his ability.
This went on to happen for the next two pancakes. It seemed to never have occurred to him that the pancakes were crumbling and sticking to the pan because he didn't put butter on before, but that's something to remember for next time.
Shiro and Hope put the messy, sprinkled-filled, pancakes on a plate. Shiro then helped Hope off the counter. Hope ran over to her room to get the card she made while Shiro stayed in the kitchen pouring a cup of coffee for Adam and himself.
The time was now 7:25. Shiro and Hope walked down the hall towards Shiro and Adam's bedroom. "Hold the plate with two hands, so you don't drop it" Hope nodded, holding the plate and card tightly.
Shiro pushed the door open carefully, trying to make as little noise as possible. Hope followed closely, sitting down at the foot of the bed. Shiro shook Adam awake, not caring to be gentle.
"I'm awake...I'm awake." Adam sat up, grabbing his glasses. "Happy birthday, papa!" Hope exclaimed, shoving the plate of pancakes forward.
"We made this for you!" Hope handed him the plate. "I will warn you though we are not chefs." Adam laughed, looking up at Shiro. "Oh trust me, I know." Adam chuckled, taking a bite out of the pancakes. "They're actually pretty good. Thank you, guys." Shiro smiled, feeling a scene of pride for making something edible.
"Papa look, I made this for you!" Hope handed Adam her hand made card. The cover of the card had a picture of the three of them drawn with the words 'Happy Birthday' written. Adam opened the card, reading the note Hope put.
'Happy birthday Papa. I love you very much. Thank you for giving me kisses and making me feel better when I'm sad. I love you!'
Hope also put drawings of hearts all over the page. The simple card was enough to bring Adam to tears. "Thank you so much, love. That was very sweet of you." Adam whipped the tears off his face.
"We truly have the best daughter in the world, don't we?" Adam asked looking up at Shiro. Shiro nodded. "You know, she was the one who suggested putting the sprinkles in your pancakes."
"I love sprinkles! She knows me better than you do clearly." Hope smiled, happy her father appreciated her decision. The family spent the rest of their morning talking, laughing, and most importantly insulting Shiro.
