The night was over fast. Jamie had fallen asleep long ago, leaving me with Netflix and the night. I glanced over at Jamie who was curled up in the fetal position, one hand under his head, the other placed between his lags as if he were cold. 'He looks so peaceful when he sleeps,' I sweetly thought. Looking over, I noticed a blanket on the back of the love seat he had perpendicular to the full couch we were laying on. I carefully stood up and went over to the love seat, grasping the blanket and bringing it back over to Jamie, covering him up. 'Did he just smile," I thought, taking another look at his face. Shaking my head, I sleepily walked back over to the love seat and laid down, falling asleep.
"Wake up, Carmin!" Jamie whisper-yelled into my ear. As my senses came to, I felt a blanket on top of my body and a pillow, that was not there before, under my head. Lifting my head up, I felt excruciating pain fly through my noggin.
"Owowowowow," Jamie yelped, grasping his forehead. It was only then that I had realized that I bashed my head into his when I sat up.
"I'm so sorry!"
"It's fine. It was just a little bump."
"It seemed to hurt you more than a little bump would."
"I'll be fine," he laughed, "anyway, Kriss will be home soon. I should probably get you home."
"Uh, alright," I said, getting up. Once I had gotten my things, I started to fold the blanket Jamie had covered me with.
"You do not have to do that," Jamie said as he watched me fold the fabric.
"I insist! I am your guest and it is wrong for me to leave a mess." All Jamie did was smile.
Once we were halfway to my house, I started to think. 'If Jamie knows Kriss is cheating, why does he continue to put up with him?' I guess I can't put on a really well poker face when I think because Jamie glanced at me and then said, "what are you thinking about?"
"What? Oh. Nothing," I smiled.
"Lies. What's up?" He caught me.
"Well, I was just-," I was cut off by Jamie's phone ringing. He shot it a glare and then picked it up.
"Hey, babe. No. I am-. Fine. I'll be home soon. Kriss, no. Please. Fine!" He yelled. Once he did, he stopped the car and pulled over in an abandoned parking lot. He parked the car and then put his head in in his hands. I could hear him sobbing.
"J-Jamie?" I questioned.
"I-I'm fine," he stuttered out monotonously, "I am always fine. Fine and dandy."
"Jamie, talk to me." He lifted his head up from his hands, his eyes starting to puff and redden. It was then that I noticed his once blue eyes were now a greyish colour. 'They must change with his mood. I know people like that, although theirs never changes to a completely different colour,' I thought.
"I want to leave him." Jamie cried.
"Well, why don't you?"
"He won't let me."
"Jamie, you should be able to get into a relationship and leave on your own terms."
"I have tried. He just abuses me. I know that is what I am going to get when I get home because I didn't tell him where I was going. I've called the police too. They didn't do anything because Kriss knows how to hit and not leave a mark." He explained, tears running down his face.
"Why don't you just leave when he is not home like you just did?"
"He has my car bugged. He has my phone bugged. He probably has a bug in me."
"I'm so sorry, Jamie."
"Yeah, that's all anyone says because they can't do shit about it. No one can. It's pointless. He won't let me leave him. I play it off as he is just cheating and I know nothing when I am out with friends, but when I am alone, all I can do is pray and hope that one day someone will be brave enough to believe what I have to say for once. For God's sake, I am a twenty-five year old man. I work at a coffee shop. I shoudln't even be in this mess."
"Jamie. I will be that once person who is brave enough to believe you."
"Really?" Jamie questioned.
"Really."
