"The king is back." Mirae groaned. She put her head under the covers, hoping to drown out the daechwita that was playing. When she realized that it wasn't going to help, she gave up, putting the covers back down.
"Of course. Who else would be so obnoxious as to announce their return with loud instruments while the entire kingdom is asleep?" Yoongi muttered sleepily, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her closer to him.
"It must be nice to live like that- doing whatever you want whenever you want." Mirae said sarcastically, but her words woke Yoongi up.
"If I was king, I'd be able to give you a nice home, you'll dress in the finest silks, eat nothing but the finest meat." He whispered. Mirae looked him in the eyes, planting a soft, sweet kiss on his lips.
"Yoongi-ah, I don't want any of that." She smiled. "You are all I need."

Park Mirae felt the drums pounding in her ears. The wind instruments drowning out the sound of her heartbeat. She kneeled with her head bowed, as she had been doing for the last hour. She couldn't see anything because her head was covered with a hood, but she knew what was happening.
The king was coming.
Suddenly, the music stopped and the hood was yanked from her head. She blinked slowly, letting her eyes adjust to the sunlight.
"Park Mirae." A booming voice said. She looked up at the sound of her name. Next to her stood a man with a sword in his hands. Her executioner.
But she didn't care. All she could focus on was the man standing on the balcony, looking down at her with hatred in his eyes.
The king.
Yoongi.
Shortly after the previous king returned, the kingdom was attacked. All men who were able were forced to serve in the military. Yoongi, being one of them, was assigned to battalion five who ended up being the reason why they won the war. He was rewarded handsomely and was even officially recruited into the military where he quickly rose up the ranks, and with his new job came new comforts they weren't able to afford before- a proper house instead of their rundown hut, new clothes, fresh food, but Mirae also saw the change it was creating inside Yoongi. The power got to his head. Her once sweet, compassionate husband became a ruthless general. She pleaded multiple times for him to just resign so they could go back to their simple life, but he refused.
So she ran away and left him.
Soon after, Yoongi led a coup d'état and overthrew the king, taking the throne for himself.
She had lived a few months peacefully by herself when she heard the daechwita, signaling the army's return, led by Yoongi, from yet another battle.
She just wanted to see a glimpse of him to know he was okay. She didn't know she was going to get caught.
"For your sins against the crown, you are sentenced to death." The executioner announced. "Do you have anything to say in your defense?"
Mirae kept her gaze on the floor. No words could express how she was feeling.
She could feel him staring hard at her.
When she didn't say anything, the executioner raised his sword.
Mirae closed her eyes.
'Goodbye, Yoongi. I'll always love you.'
"Stop!"
Mirae opened her eyes, looking up towards the source of the voice. Yoongi was gripping the railings of the balcony, his glaring as he shouted at her.
"You don't have anything you want to say to me?"
Mirae felt tears gathering at the corner of her eyes. It was the first time she had heard his voice in such a long time. She was so happy that she didn't even process his words.
Yoongi was furious as he waited for her answer. He knew what she thought of him- heartless, vicious, but he just did what he had to do to rise up the ranks so he could give her the life she deserved.
But she left him.
After years of marriage, she just left.
She deserved to be punished.
But as Yoongi saw her eyes beginning to tear up, he felt his wall of anger crack.
Even after all these years, he still loved her.
"Take her away." He commanded. He didn't want to look at her anymore because it just confused him, and he couldn't show any weakness as the king.
Meanwhile, Mirae smiled as she was pulled to her feet and guided back to her cell.
Maybe the man she had fallen in love with was still in there somewhere.
