I slipped on sweats and a hoodie over my leotard.
"Bye, mom. I'll be back here at 3 okay?" I waved at her. She waved me over as she adjusted Joelie's technique on the beam.
I put my duffel bag over my shoulder and walked up to her, "Yes?"
"You're not doing school here?" Mom asked.
My mom and I's relationship had become rockier over the last few days, especially since I released the video telling the whole world about my sexual abuse. She was unhappy that I had a boyfriend when she strictly instructed me not to and angry that I didn't tell her about the assault after it happened, like I did my dad.
I shook my head, "I'm going to see a friend"
"Again?" Mom raised an eyebrow, "Nova..."
"Mom, I'm going to see Phoenix," I said.
"You are always out with your friends" My mom shook her head.
"Mom, it's Phoenix" I emphasized, "And I didn't have to come in today. It's supposed to be my day off"
"Fine, take as many days off as you want. World's selection camp is in a week but you might as well just not compete if you're going to rest so much" My mom shrugged.
"Mom..." I trailed off. She ignored me and continued watching my sister on the beam.
I sighed and walked to my car. I texted Phoenix letting her know that I was on my way. Once I got to the rehab facility, I signed in and was guided to a room where Phoenix was sitting with a lady, who I assumed was her therapist.
"Hi, it's nice to meet you" I shook her hand, "I'm Nova Mohana"
"I'm Dr. Sarah Reid" She smiled. I sat down in the one empty chair at the round table and looked over at Phoenix.
I smiled at her, "You look like shit"
Phoenix laughed, "Well, I've been in this fucking place for almost four months with nothing to do except for sit and talk about my feelings"
I wrinkled my nose, "I'd hate that"
"Okay girls" Dr. Reid cut in, "So Nova, Phoenix has a letter that we spent the last few days writing that she wants to read to you. Don't interrupt her until she's done and really take into consideration everything she's saying"
