My heart beat fast as I slipped Midnight silently off of my paws and onto the sand. As I slipped out of camp, I remembered what Shadow had said when I was walking him back to his territory. "Meet me here tonight." He had said, his briliant blue eyes gazing into mine. "What?!" I had spat. "Meet you?! No, Shadow. I..I can't." For some reason, some part of me tempted me to say yes. The young tom was, unfortunately, quit charming. He stepped closer. "Please. Just once. If it feels wrong, I won't ask again."
"Okay." I had finnaly agreed. And now, here I was, slipping out of a camp of asleep cats, unaware of of my forbidden meeting. As I padded through the undergrowth, I relized that the beach was alive with sound. Waves crashed againsted the sand, crickets chipped, prey rustled around in the ferns. Suddenly, a loud yelp followed by a crash interupted my thought. What? Heartbeat picking up again, I raced toward the sound.
To my surprise, I saw Shadow floundering in the water. Forcing myself not to roll my eyes, I called out to him, "Swim!" Either he didn't hear me or was panicing to much to even try and paddle to shore. Sighing, I padded over to the twoleg-bridge that went out over the water. Glancing over at Shadow to see if he was going to swim, I leapt in. Cold water covored me head to toe as I sunk down. A few tail legenthes away, I could see Shadows paws, thrashing wildly. Swimming to the surface, I started swimming toward him. Suddenly, I heard a splash behind me. Fur prickling, I whipped around. All I saw was a fin before the animal disapeared under water. Shark, or dolphin? Part of me pondered. Anougher part screamed, Does it matter? Both are dangerous to cats! Listening to the second voice, I began to kick my legs harder. Finnaly reaching Shadow, I gasped, "Shadow! Come on, swim!" Shadow opened his mouth as if to speak, then his head went under water. Panicing, I took a deep breath and dunked my head under water, grabbing Shadows scruff, and pulling him to the surface. Heaving under the weight, I pulled Shadows water heavy body toward the shore. "Almost...Gasp...Pant...There!" I heaved Shadows onto the sand, callapsing and watching as the shark/dolphin swam away. Once I had caught my breath, I sat up and glared at him. He was stitting up, licking his fur the oppisit way to dry it. "What do you think your doing?!" I hissed. He looked at me with a playful smile and his face. "Thanking you for saving my life out there." I snorted and rolled my eyes. Don't give in.. Don't give in.... He stopped licking. "Seriously, though. Thanks. I would've died without you." I turned away from his gleaming eyes. "No." I replied stubbornly. "You could've swam." He glanced down. "Yeah, right." He mumbled. I could hardly believe my ears. A cat who can't swim? What? "You can't swim?" Shadow shook his head. "No." I grinned. "I've never met a cat who can't swim. You, like, might be the only one!" Shadows ears twitched. "Am not." He argued.
"Are to!"
"Am not!"
"Are to!"
"Am not!"
"Are to!"
I found myself leaning in. Embarassed, I quickly took a few steps back. "Alright." I admitted. "You might not me the only cat. But its not common, you know." He grinned at me. "Yeah, I know. C'mon." He stood up and padded across the beach. I admired that he wasn't even the least bit fazed that he could've just been killed by a shark. Or a dolphin. Hurrying to catch up with him, I asked, trying not to seem like I wanted to know to much, even though I did. "So, why did you envite me out here?" He looked away and shurgged. "I wanted to get to know you. You know, never to bad to know the enemy." He nudged my playfully, but his eyes weren't in it. I nudged him back. "Are you sure?" He glanced at me. "Of course." I arched an eyebrow. "Really? You envite me out here, in the middle of the night, jsut because you want to 'get to know they enemy'?" "Okay okay." He laughed. "I do want to get to know you. That part was true. But, I also envited you out here because..." A rock dropped off the cliff.
