As I laid in my nest, listening to the kits playing outside, I replayed when Starrys partol came to rescue me. I was sitting in the Others camp, sick and tired of being cooped up in that small den all day and night, when Shadow walked in. I was so relieved to see him, I aslmost forgot what he did to me. But I remembered before I ran over to press my muzzel to his cheek. "What do you want?" I snarled. He flinched. "A patrol came to..get you." Joy had flooded through me. I'm going home! Shadow had led me out of camp. The patrol came into veiw. It held at least half the camp. If the Others decided to fight to keep me, they'd hopefully be out numbered. Suddenly, Shadow whispered, "Meet me on the twoleg bridge tomarrow night." I gasped. After all he'd done to me? Betrayed me, acted as if he didn't know me? And now he wanted me to meet him?! I glared at him. "You betray me, acted as if my love for you wasn't real, and now you want me to meet you again? No, Shadow." He visibly flinched, as if I'd hit him with a mental blow. "Okay." He sighed. He had padded over to Fox, and stood beside him.
Even though I was exaughsted, I couldn't sleep. Shadow was still the only thing on my mind. I had to get out. Sitting up, I peared out of the den. Swoop and Starry where sitting outside, talking. The seemed aborbed in there conversation. Perfect.I Sielently slipped out of the den, staying pressed against the rocks, hidden in the shadows. Then, I bolted through the fern tunnel. Normally, I would want Starry to coem with me, but not tonight. She would only pester me about the Others 'secret'. Sighing, I hoped over a rock, glade to be alone with my thoughts. I made my way to the twoleg bridge to watch the moon rise. I padded out onto the wood bridge, ears flat, ignoring any sent of prey. I laid on the edge, my tail dangling in the water, and wondered if it was the right thing to do when I left Jack. I wonder how he is..... I remembered how he had caught prey for me. A kittypet. I smiled sadly. Paw steps behind me cut off my thoughts. Starry? Had she followed me out? When I turned, the cat behind me deffinatly wasn't Starry. It was Shadow. "You came." He purred. I felt slightly relieved to see him. But quickly pushed my relief down. "What do you mean, 'You came'? You asked me to meet you tomarrow night." Shadow sat down and started washing his paws. "I know you." He said simply. I purred. Suddenly, he jumped up. "Come on!" He urged I flicked my ear. "Okay." I agreed. I raced after him, heart pounding. He glanced back every minute or two, grinning wildly. I was purring for the first time in days. Finnnaly, just when I thought my lungs would burst, he stopped at a huge pine tree. I stared up at it. "Wow." I whispered. Its branches twisted high above my head, reaching the top of the cliff. He jumped easily onto the bottom branch. "I may not be a water cat." He purred, starig at me through the leaves. "But I am a tree-cat!" I forced down a giggle. "Yeah. Uh, you have fun up there." I backed away and sat down, tilting my head to watch him climb. Suddenly, he jumped down. "C'mon." He said, a teasing look in his eyes. "Don't tell me you can't climb." I bristled. "I cam to climb!" I just don't want to. "Then lets go." He jumped up into the tree again. I gulped. Standing up, I padded over to the tree. "Oh please." He peared down at me. I growled playfully. Finnaly, I jumped up on the branch, flinching. Relizing that I hadn't fallen off yet, I jumped onto the next branch. And the next. And the next. Finnaly, we reached the top of the tree. Shadow showed me how to climb out of the tree and onto the cliff, by jumping. I balanced precialy on the top branch. It wobbled beneath my weight. Closing my eyes, I jumped. I landed on the very edge of the cliff, and rocks crumbled beneath me. I gasped. "Help!" I yelped. Shadow lunged forward, grabbed my scruff, and hauled me onto the cliff. I stood there, shaking. "See?" He padded over to me, grinning. "I'd never let you down." I smiled weakly. "C'mon." He raced off over the hill. I glanced around at my suroundings. I was standing on a grassy meadow, littered with tall trees. Shadow was racing off in the direction of a small ledge over looking the sun-drown-place. I followed, sprinting to catch up. When I got there, Shadow was already padding onto the ledge. I followed cautiously, praying that the ledge wouldn't crumble under my paws. Satifyed that if was safe, I sat down besdie Shadow and stared at the beautiful veiw. For as far as I could see, there was blue-green water. He fadded into the sky. "Wow." I breathed. Shadow glanced sideways at me. "I know, right." A breeze ruffled my fur, making me shiver. I pressed against Shadow for warmth. I watched the stars glisten on the water for a few more moments, eyelids heavy, before letting myself drift into sleep.
