Cat, Hazel, and Thalia were still fast asleep on the couch, when the doorbell rang. Hazel woke with teeth flashing, and tail whipping, which instantly woke Cat and Thalia, who were asleep next to her. As they scrambled out of her way, The doorbell rang again, and the two girls exchanged confused looks. Cat went to the window, and peeked behind the curtain. She groaned. It was a classmate from school, one of the girls who lived close by.
She always wanted to walk with Cat to school. She insisted it was because she liked her company, but Cat knew it was because she was scared of the huge greyhound a couple houses down. Cat had completely forgotten about school. Her name was Jade Nichols, and while she was nice, Cat didn't entirely like her. She was boring, and not very intelligent. She had long light brown hair, and blue eyes. She was 13 years old, like Cat, and her white back pack was covered in unicorn stickers.
The doorbell rang again, as Cat turned to Thalia, clearly panicking. "I forgot we had school! What are we going to do?" Hazel trotted over to them, and yawned loudly. What's going on? She stood on her hind legs, and peered out the window. Cat hurriedly pulled her back before Jade could look at the window, and see her. "That's our neighbor, Jade. You need to stay away from the window, so she can't see you." Hazel backed away from the window, albeit reluctantly. What's she doing here? "Today's a school day" Cat answered. Her back pack was sitting on the kitchen table, so she pulled it off, and put it on. She ran to the kitchen, and pulled a cheese stick out of the fridge. "What are you doing?" Thalia asked, as Cat put her text books into her bag. "I'm going to school, I'll be back by around 3, take care of Hazel for me, bye!" Then she was out the door before Thalia had a chance to get a word in.
School was boring, as usual. Her best friend, Kijana, was in practically none of her classes, and her teachers droned on and on about things they would most likely never use in the real world. Cat almost fell asleep several times. Mrs.Slater, Cat's math teacher, had started teaching radicals. They had learned those last year! Finally, lunch came around. The bell rung, and students flooded out of the classrooms, stopping to chat with friends, and to talk to teachers. Cat made a beeline for the cafeteria, with her pathetic little cheese stick.
Kijana was sitting at their usual table, waiting for her. "What took you so long?" She said, in her faint accent. Kijana had long dark brown hair, that she normally kept in 2 braids. She had dark skin, and brown eyes. Her nails were always painted silver. Kijana had been Cat's best friend since 3rd grade, when she had just come from Africa, after one of the older kids had pushed her during recess, and Kijana had come and pushed her harder, making her and her posse leave them alone. Kijana had always been so brave, and Cat wished she could be like that. "The halls were flooded, and I don't have long legs like you." She replied, sitting down next to her and unwrapping her cheese stick.
It was true. Kijana was the tallest 8th grader Cat had ever met. while, in contrast, Cat was one of the shortest. Kijana grinned, and ruffled Cat's hair. ever since Kijana had started to grow taller than Cat, she had loved to do that. Cat didn't mind too much, but only because it was Kijana. If any one else did it, she would judo flip them. Taking karate had its perks. Kijana looked at Cat's cheese stick, and made a face. "Lets go get you something to eat." She tugged Cat up, and pulled her over to the lunch line. Cat tried to pull herself away, to no avail. "I'm not allowed to buy lunch without my parents permission!" Kijana grinned again. "I know. That's why i'm going to buy you something. Today's lunch is nachos!" Cat smiled. She should've known. Kijana was always buying others something to eat. Last week, she had given a complete stranger her cookie, just because he looked sad.
After they got their lunches, they finished them of quickly, no talking much because they only had 10 minutes left of lunch. The lunch line was so long, it took forever to get lunch, so they didn't have much time to eat. After lunch, Cat bade Kijana farewell, and headed off to her least favorite class. French.
