The Common Room

The common room did live up to my expectations. It was absolutely brilliant as Harry would say. It was covered in black and green and dimly lit but it had a cosy aura to it despite everything about it being dark. The couches were leather and large. There was one right as you walked in facing the fireplace and one on each side of the first one. The fire was crackling and there was already a lot of students sitting around on couches and armchairs chatting away. By far my favorite part of the common room though was the walls. They were stone grey and covered in different markings and engravings mainly including serpents, snakes and weird symbols I didn't understand.

The girls dorms were just as magnificent. The beds were a velvet green color and the curtains were too. They were long and just about skimmed the dark wooden floor. I slept well there on the first day, I made friends with a few of the girls. Pansy Parkinson and Millicent Bullstrode asked me about my family and made small talk and then shortly after started nattering about who the best looking boy in our year is.

My first day was very tiring as I didn't sleep much at all the night before. I was too busy worrying about having to face Ron, Harry and Hermione tomorrow.

My first class was potions with my head of house, Professor Severus Snape. He had long black greasy hair that curtained his narrow eyes. Most of the students were scared of him but I thought he was pretty cool. I mean he was scary of course but also very interesting to me.

"I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory and even put a stopper in death", he began. I was sitting next to Pansy and I made eye contact with Harry who started to write something on a piece of parchment. Then when Snapes back was turned suddenly Harry made a little paper plane out of the parchment and blew it over to me. It landed right on my desk. I looked over at him confused and he mouthed at me to open it.

have dinner with us at the Gryffindor table today
P.S we miss you :)

I smile down at the piece of paper and look up at Harry who grins. I look up to see Draco sitting in front of me with his head turned back. His eyebrows are raised as if he wants an explanation. He looks at Harry who's still grinning at me and rolls his eyes, turning back into his seat without a word. Why do I get the feeling Draco has taken a dislike to Harry.

Lunch comes around and I walk out of charms class with Pansy and Draco stops me before I walk into the hall for dinner. "(Y/N)", he says softly.
"Hi Draco how are you?"
"I'm fine how are you?"
"Hungry", I reply truthfully.
"Well come on then let's go eat", he says grabbing my hand. I pull away as politely as I can.
"I'm kind of having lunch at the Gryffindor table today", I say nervously.
"Oh right, of course. Go and have lunch with the same people who slagged off our house", he said his face dropping suddenly.
"Draco they're really not like that it's..."
"Save it (Y/N). I'll see you in the common room later", and before I can say anything he's walking off.

"You okay?", a voice says suddenly as i'm about to continue walking. It's Blaise. He's beaming as usual.
"Oh yeah I'm fine."
"I'll save you a seat then", he says turning swiftly and I can't find it in me to tell him not to.

I sit down at the table beside Hermione, Ron and Harry across from us. I'm halfway on my chair and Hermione pulls me into a tight hug.
"I missed you guys", I say mid hug.
"We did too", Ron said his mouth full of food.
"Well me and Harry did, I don't even know why Hermione is here to be honest".
"Oh shut up Ronald", Hermione turns to me.
"Ronald is mad because he thinks I've replaced you in the friend group", she said shooting an angry look at Ron.
"I never said that! You're putting words in my mouth", he said furiously.
"There's no room in your mouth Ron will all that food", I say joining in.
He blushes suddenly while Harry and Hermione laugh loudly.
"That is not true", Ron says in self defense.
"You sure about that Ron?", Harry asks glancing down at his plate full of food. I try not to laugh but accidentally let out a giggle.

We get to talking about classes and which ones we like. Apparently Hermione is particularly good at charms which doesn't surprise me and Ron and Harry were late to their transfiguration class, again this doesn't surprise me. I tell them about my earlier run in with Draco.
"I don't know, he's convinced you guys hate Slytherin"
"Not Slytherin," Hermione mumbled sipping her butter beer.
"Just him".
"You finally speak some sense Hermione", Ron says sarcastically.
"We're not particularly fond of him. But it has nothing to do with his house", Harry says and I believe him.
"It's just, it would be so much easier if I was in the same house as you guys", I say speaking my mind.
"Yes it would" Harry sighs.
"It wouldn't be right though. You're meant to be in Slytherin (Y/N), and it doesn't make you a bad person regardless of your houses bad history", Hermione says and she's right. As always.
"I'm just glad you all didn't turn on me".
"Bloody hell you make us sound horrible", Ron joked.
"You are quite horrible Ron to be fair", Harry grinned and suddenly I was warm inside again. I was at ease and at peace with my house despite it being inconvenient.
"(Y/N).", Harry says suddenly quite serious.
"Be careful with Malfoy okay?". He pauses.
"Why should i-?", I begin.
"I agree with Harry. He's not the type of person you want to get muddled up with. My dad works with his dad in the ministry and he's into all that dark magic stuff", Ron adds.
Just because Draco's parents are bad doesn't mean Draco is.
Right?
Or does it.
"Hello. Earth to (Y/N)!" Hermione shouts.

Dinner is over way too soon and we say our goodbyes. I go straight up to my dorm after dinner and write a letter to Mother and Father. Misty is sitting on my beside table and I stroke her gently in between words.
Then I seal up the envelope and place it in Mistys black beak, and off she goes, flying into the dark blue sky taking my message with her.
Oh how I wish I could go with her.

I take off my robes and sink into my silky bed.
Thoughts replay over and over in my head but I distract myself with dreams of butter beer and flying with misty and before I know it I've drifted into a deep deep sleep.
