Maya POV
Who knew that the big guy over here could drive so fast?
‘Hey, Sasquatch! Slow it down, buddy!’ I laughed, as we sped back into the yard. ‘I have fixed up this car to sell, you realise?’
‘Uh, yeah, sorry,’ Sam said sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck as we got out the car – and met by a stone faced Dean and a fuming Uncle Bobby.
‘Where the hell did you take my niece, you idjit!’ he yelled, storming over to Sam.
‘Uncle Bobby, calm down! Sam wanted to look at a car, and I showed him the Dodge’s I’d just finished. It was a business deal!’ I protested, trying to make it better than Uncle Bobby thought it was whilst stepping in between him and Sam. He seemed to calm down a bit after that, and couldn’t think of anything to say, so just went back inside.
Dean however, was not so easy to persuade.
‘Really, man? We only just met her, and what, five hours after persuading her we were actually human? You take her out in a car that she worked on?! She could’ve hijacked it!’ he exclaimed.
‘Uh, excuse me, but ‘she’ has a name,’ I walked up to them both.
‘Well sweetheart, just because you’re Bobby’s niece or whatever doesn’t mean we have to trust, or like you,’ he brushed me off and turned back to Sam. And I wasn’t standing for it.
‘I swear to God, call me sweetheart one more time, Ken Doll, and I will end you,’ I hissed. His face was priceless, and Sam snorted with laughter for the third time.
‘Please do not use the Lord’s name in vain,’ I heard a gruff voice from behind me, and I swung round whilst grabbing the pistol from my belt. ‘What the hell, Feather Ass?!’
‘Could you also not call me that, Maya? I need to talk to you and Bobby,’ Cas said simply, and turned to walk into the house.
‘Whatever you say, Cassie,’ I said, following him. ‘Is he always like that?’ I asked Sam and Dean. They just shrugged and nodded, whilst I sighed and went inside.
‘Bobby, you need to tell her true identity. Heaven is searching for Isda’s grace, and nothing but harm will come to her when they inevitably find her,’ Cas’ hushed voice just reached me as I silently stepped through the doorway. Or at least tried to.
‘Damn it,’ I sighed as a floorboard creaked.
‘Maya, that you?’ Uncle Bobby called out to me.
‘Yeah, Uncle Bobby, I’m coming,’ I called back, wandering into the living room.
‘Sit down?’ he sighed lightly, gesturing to my usual couch by the window. I curled my legs up under me, not noticing Sam and Dean coming in the door. Uncle Bobby looked over to Castiel, and then back at me.
‘There’s something you need to know, Maya. And it might be a little overwhelming because of you just finding out about angels and everything,’ he scratched the back of his head, trying to procrastinate from whatever he wanted to tell me.
‘Come on, Uncle Bobby, it can’t be that bad,’ I joked.
‘Okay, so, the night you were born, an angel named Isda was banished from Heaven. Now, every angel has their grace, kind of like their blood, but it gives them their mojo. Like, the power to heal and zap places and all that. As Isda fell, she was separated from her grace, and it was placed inside the first baby to be born at the time…’ he trailed off.
‘and… that was me?’ I breathed. I was basically, an angel? Not happening.
I flipped my legs off the couch and rushed outside to the one hiding place no-one knew about, not even Uncle Bobby – the roof. So yeah, it was a sloped roof, but there was a small section around the back that was flat, and I kept blankets, books and pillows in an old Marine’s locker I found at an antique store in town.
Not being stupid, I had a wrapped a blanket with salt in it around the perimeter of the flat roof. I climbed up the ladder that I made sure was secure, put up the clear sheet that I tented under in case it rained, and curled up in the blankets before falling asleep, staring at the stars.
Sam POV
After Maya rushed out the back door, me and Dean made ourselves known to Bobby. Cas, of course, already knew we were there.
‘Hey, Bobby? You want me to go check on her?’ I asked quietly, to my second dad who was sitting with his head in his hands. When he didn’t respond, I nodded to Dean and Cas, who seemed to understand. I went out the back door and tried to figure out where Maya would’ve gone.
There were a lot of old cars in the yard, but I got the feeling she was smarter than that. I heard a rustling above me and turned my gun on the noise. Once I realised there was nothing there, I noticed a rusty fire escape ladder that I’d never really processed was there before. The rust made it almost the same colour as the wall, and invisible. Bingo.
I slowly, so I didn’t make a noise, climbed up the ladder. I thought the roof of the house was sloped, but it turned out there was a flat part that was hidden. And there was a bundle of blankets and pillows curled up in the corner surrounded by a line of salt. I didn’t want to wake Maya up, but she needed to face this, and I knew she was strong enough.
‘Hey, Maya, you need to wake up,’ I said softly. I expected her to slowly stretch and yawn and all that, but no. She was a hunter's niece, and I was greeted with a fist in my nose.
‘Oh my god, Sam! I’m so sorry!’ she said, grabbing an old blanket from a foot locker beside her to hold against my bleeding nose.
‘It’s fine, really,’ I laughed at Maya’s horrified face. ‘See? It’s stopped bleeding.’
We sat cross legged on the roof for a bit in silence, until I noticed Maya fiddling with something around her neck.
‘What’s that?’ I asked, gesturing to the necklace.
‘Hm?’ she answered absent-mindedly. ‘Oh, this? I’ve had it since Uncle Bobby got me, you know, after my parents- ‘ it didn’t seem like she could even talk about her parent’s death, even though she never really knew them.
‘It’s a locket that my mom had, and she gave to me when I was born. It has pictures of them in it,’ she smiled. ‘And, this- ’ she showed me the ring on the chain. ‘- is a ring that no-one really knows where it came from, but it’s got this symbol on it,’ she turned the ring to show me a small swirling symbol, and I recognised it immediately.
It was a symbol of an angel.
