"Is this the place?"
Chichi nodded and stepped turned off the ignition, turning back to pick her bag sitting in the back seat before wearing the pair of wine suede shoes she had paired with her white and wine attire. She always liked to take off her shoes before driving because it seemed to assure her that her feet were on the right pedals.
Hibba unbuckled her seat belt and first pulled down the view mirror from the car's roof to check her face before pushing it back and stepping out of the car, adjusting the baby blue Kaftan gown she had worn that morning to work. She pulled the veil she had folded over her bag and spread it evenly around her cap covered face and body.
The two women, both in their early twenties walked majestically to meet the two people waiting for them in the shade of an oak tree next to an expanse of land in the city centre, Hibba's heart thumped though, because she knew she could not afford this area. It was prime everything in Abuja and would be good for busniess, but she Hibatullah Abubakar could not afford it.
"Hello. I'm Femi Ade-Williams." The real estate company owner greeted, Hibba sent a smirk on ChiChi's direction because Femi didn't have to be there but because he really wanted to see ChiChi. He could have left the introduction to the realtor standing beside him.
"I'm Hibatullah Abubakar, and you are?" Hibba prompted the realtor to speak, knowing that the fact that her boss was in attendance would make her clam up. They exchanged happy pleasantries and began to look over the land, it was next to the road, with just enough allowance for a five car car park.
Hibba took out her phone and zoomed out the structure she would be constructing at the site and asked absentmindedly Chichi to look at it. Only to find Chichi smiling and toying with her hair, deep in conversation with Femi. Hibba shook her head and began to engage the realtor, noticing that the farther they moved away from her boss, the more she spoke up.
"So, how much a year is this land for rent?" The realtor stopped and pursed her lips. Then she opened her mouth to quote a six figure sum that sent Hibba's head swimming.
"It's that small?" She asked out loud as against the even ruder questions she had in her head to ask about the price. It seemed so unreal and she had to look around again to see if nothing was wrong with the land. It was rainy season so it couldn't be a swamp masquerading as dry land, nor was it a a gully.
"Yes, Ma'am, the price is this for now. The housing market in the city is facing a slump since two houses of developers collapsed a month ago due to bad jobs. We are still climbing out of that slump." Hibba prompted over Chichi who was now looking in her direction with a wave of her hand and she watched as Chichi swaggered over. Chichi couldn't see it yet, but there was a flicker of interest from her towards Femi that she was vehemently denying with her head but her heart was saying Yes to.
When Chichi reached, Hibba leaned over and asked her with a dense whisper "Hard girl, Hard girl, you've fallen for him abi?" Hibba watched her friend roll her eyes, make a face before shaking her head resolutely.
"There's no falling for Abeg. My investigations say he has a girlfriend." Hibba blinked, but the realtor was already trying to hear them so she ended the conversation.
A few minutes later, she signed the dotted lines and became the leaser of that piece of land, shaking as she transferred the money into the required account, on the spot and got a receipt from the realtor. She cradled the receipt as she stepped back into ChiChi's car and drove away to the architect who was supposed to design the site to Hibba's taste.
