So this was what Koa felt like.
Luna had exhausted herself so much that she wasn't sure how she ended up here, but she was sure that she felt completely numb. Completely numb and everything was completely silent. Luna wasn't used to the world being this silent.
Luna sobbed again and hid her face in her hands. The waters that had been protecting her had receded and she felt exposed and defenseless. And for the first time in her life, Luna felt completely and utterly alone. Alone in the silence and there was no wisecrack joke from Zale to make it feel better.
There was a hand on her shoulder and Luna flinched, curling in on herself and covering her ears again and starting to whimper again. Memories of sound penetrated her ears and she resisted the urge to wipe the tears off her face again. The hand was gentle but it was cold, refusing comfort to the girl. It was obvious that it was Koa. She was the only person who could react like this but at the moment, she didn't care who was next to her. Instead, she sniffled and pulled away, refusing to move despite Koa's best attempts to get her up from the soaked ground.
Eventually, Koa walked away and let someone else comfort Luna because it wasn't Koa who knelt down next to her. From the flash of orange hair, Luna concluded that it must be Jude. He set a hand on her shoulder gently, rubbing it soothingly when she didn't pull away, and slowly, Luna fell into his arms, sobbing. He held her carefully and didn't try to pull her away, letting her cry. For the moment, that was all she really needed.
Up until that point, Luna was very insistent on not leaving her brother behind, despite knowing that by now, he was already on his way to Hades and Persephone and the Underworld. She kept his hand in hers tightly, just like she had not that long ago when they were causing a storm in a small town before they were dragged into this mess, and hid her face back in Jude's embrace. She wanted to scream and cry, let the waters flow back through the room, and destroy everything, but she was simply too exhausted.
She had the urge to let the world be destroyed, watch it crumble around her at the hands of Hera, but even the idea of a storm by the hands of anyone brought back painful memories and the young goddess sobbed again. Jude hugged her tightly, allowing her to cry, but Luna found that she would allow him to coax her off the muddy ground. The stone and bronze were splattered with mud and dirt, soaked in water, much like Luna herself and she felt her stomach drop at the mess her emotions had caused.
Luna was muddy, tired, and depressed, but she had made it out of there alive. For the first time in her life, Luna was completely isolated in her own, silent world. She wasn't entirely sure that was a good thing.
When she was very young, her father would constantly remind her of her curse. Even before she was born, Luna had been cursed by Medusa to never hear. The personification of the saying "pleas fallen on deaf ears". She would be forced to rely completely on her brother for access to sound, a small taste of freedom in an otherwise silent world. Her father was over her shoulder all the time, refusing to let anyone near her. But aside from her father, Luna had never been bothered by the curse. She had never minded her silent world. After all, it had been all she had ever known. The rest of the Goddlets had learned to communicate with her and Zale had always been around to keep her company no matter where they were. In fact, Luna could go years forgetting that she was cursed at all if her father would let her.
Of course, she loved being able to hear everyone's voices for the first time. Luna had to admit that she enjoyed it. But it had also been loud and overstimulating and she had found herself wishing for the silence back. How could others stand living in a world like this? But at the same time, she had loved it because, for the first time in her life, Luna hadn't been afraid to leave her brother's side. When they were anywhere but home, Luna was never more than twenty feet from him, but being able to hear meant that she could explore on her own, unafraid of being caught off guard by something she couldn't hear.
