Worried

~

Third POV:

A few months later...

Elijah slowly walks out of his house, yelling to his family that he is going to school. He heard a response but couldn't make out what they said, not that it bothered him anyways.

Once arriving at school, Elijah started looking for Jessica again. She was not that hard to find for Elijah since she is the only person he ever met. But the girl was nowhere to be found.

"Where is she?" Elijah asked himself.

He eventually gave up when he heard the school bell ring.

He quickly reaches his math class. The class that they shared.

He entered the small room, and scanned the room for Jessica. But Jessica wasn't in math class. Elijah started worrying about his friend. After all, she was the only person he knew and he didn't want anything to happen to her.

The teacher walks in, and students get seated. The teacher started to call out names, and scan the room to see if there were any missing students. She also marked off names.

"Daniel?"

"Here."

"Joey?"

"Here."

"Jessica?"

No answer. Silence fell, and then awkwardly, the teacher went on. Kids started chattering, occasionally yelling here when their name was called on.

"Elijah?"

"Here." He said and cleared his throat. Attendance was taken, and class started. Through the whole class, Jessica didn't come. Elijah assumed she just missed a day of class and nothing major happened.

After all the morning classes, it was lunch break. Elijah checked his schedule, and he had Spanish after lunch. He hoped that he would see Jessica somewhere. In the few months they shared, Jessica had now permanently spent her lunch time with Elijah. But because she wasn't here today, he had to sit alone, and eat his sandwich alone. He didn't like that one bit because that was what he had to deal with in all the past years.

Had Jessica left him and ate with other kids? He quickly scans the lunch room, but she is nowhere to be seen. Elijah doesn't know why he is worrying so much for Jessica. Maybe because she was the only person who cared about him, so he should do so too.

Elijah was too deep in his thoughts, and choked on his sandwich. He quickly opens his bottle of water and chugs it down. Feeling better, he lets out a sigh. What has Jessica done to him?

Daniel, someone in his math class passed the table, and waved kindly at him. Elijah didn't know if it was towards him, but he waved back anyways. Daniel then left and sat with other people that were presumably his friends. Elijah sighed again. What was the point of the wave?

Elijah went through the day, alone and gloomy. Jessica must have had a great impact on him.

School ends and he stumbles his way home. The weather was similar to his emotions. The sky was all grey and there were only small patches of white clouds. The wind blew heavily and it was extremely cold today.

Once reaching home, he checked the mail like he always does, and took the mail home. As he walked inside, he spotted a letter to himself.

From: Jessica Elliot

To: Elijah Lee

He took the one that Jessica had given him, quickly ripping it and started reading it.

Hi Elijah!

Sorry I didn't go to school, I was sick, and I hope you got this mail. I might come back to school tomorrow or so. Do you want to hang out at the park? Maybe we could get to know each other more. Hope I see you at school tomorrow! We could write letters to each other! You're such a good friend, Elijah. I don't understand why people think you're weird and different from us. I'll be at the park tomorrow.

Love, Jessica.

Elijah nodded with agreement. He was so excited to see Jessica again!

Through the next day, Elijah had kept a smile on his face. He was really glad that he could meet the one person who cared for him. Maybe he was a little overly excited, but he just couldn't contain his excitement.

School had ended in a flash and Elijah returned home to put his belongings home. He proceeds to turn around to return back outside.

"Ethan, tell mother and father I'm going outside." Elijah says.

"Of course!" Ethan responds.

Elijah staggers off, and walks to the neighborhood park. It wasn't exactly a park, more like a forest reserve. The trees were all full of green and occasionally, some yellow leaves would fall gently down. There were big and small bushes surrounding the area, and some had flowers on them. The flower patches had a vibrant color pattern, and there was a faint yet pleasant aroma in the air.

He was pretty sure Jessica meant this park. He saw the park coming into view. Walking further inside the park, he saw Jessica fidgeting with a bracelet that was on her wrist.

"Jessica!" Elijah shouted. He saw his friend with excitement, and tried to walk quicker to her. But his old stiff legs prevented him from doing so. Jessica stood there, and smiled.

"I knew you'd come." Jessica grinned.

"Of course I would! You're the only friend I have. You said you were sick, what happened?" Elijah asked worriedly.

"Well, I was just a little sick and didn't feel like going to school." She spoke and Elijah nodded.

"Oh yeah!" Jessica suddenly says as she pulls something out of her pocket.

"I know friends do friendship bracelets or friendship necklaces, but high schoolers can do that too, right? But just something more mature. Like, friendship rocks! I thought really creative of this one. It's a rock, and then I drilled a hole in it, and I took my old friendship necklaces and broke off the part you wear, and put the necklace in the hole. Very creative, right?" Jessica smiled.

"Right." Elijah agreed in agreement, although not understanding everything she said.

"Thanks for this Jessica. I really appreciate it."

"Your welcome Elijah."
