They had stayed up till almost 2:00 am while Grantaire painted the beauty that was Enjolras. They talked for hours while the former worked, and E loved the way he focused on every detail of his features, it made him feel special. When they did finally climb in to bed, R glanced at the clock before saying;
"Oh, fucking Christ."
"What is it?" queried the blond beside him.
"I have less than 5 hours till I have to get up for work."
"It's okay. Sleep, babe. Cancel your alarm, I'll make sure you wake up on time."
"Are you sure? Thank you so much."
"Don't worry. Now, rest."
R pulled the covers over them both and rested his head on E's chest.
"'Night, Apollo."
"Goodnight gorgeous."

Grantaire's eyes slowly found their way open. Everything was fuzzy. He rolled over to check the clock beside his bed. 4:17 am. He cursed under his breath that he was awake so early. He turned back to the other side, to cuddle closer to his partner, only to see that he wasn't there, just wrinkled sheets where he had laid. The panic went through his mind, the same it always does when Enjolras isn't beside him. "What if he's left? What if he doesn't want me anymore?" He drowsily got up, walked across the bedroom and out into the corridor, telling himself he was going to get water, but knowing in the back of his mind the real reason why he was getting up. His feet were cold along the wooden floorboards of the hallway and his eyes were still half-shut. He saw a light from the door at the other end of the hall, which had been left slightly ajar, the door to Enjolras' study. He breathed a sigh of relief. He peered through the gap and saw that he was typing furiously, no other part of his body was moving. Only his long fingers on the keyboard. He knocked a soft and quiet knock on the door and the pony-tailed man turned immediately to face him.
"'Taire, what are you doing awake?" He sounded worried and protective.
"I can't sleep properly." His green eyes were hazy and his voice was hoarse. "I'm sorry to disturb whatever you're doing, it's clearly important, but I woke and you weren't there. I saw your door open and I was relieved you were still here."
Enjolras had stood and walked over to him. "No, no, don't apologise. I'm sorry I left you, my love." He hugged him, R's face buried in his shirt.
"What are you doing so late at night?"
"I just had some work to finish. I left it earlier to spend time with you, but I didn't want to make you feel bad so I came to finish it once you were asleep."
Grantaire felt guilty. "I'm sorry. I do understand if you have to work, I don't want you to keep having to stay up this late because I was too stupid to comprehend that you're busy."
"No, don't say that," E had never meant to make him feel bad. "I love spending time with you and I would give up my work for you no matter how busy I am." He pressed a kiss to his forehead and R smiled at him. "Now come on, let's make you some tea and get you back to bed."
The pair went down to the kitchen holding hands, where E made a mug of hot chamomile tea to help the brunet sleep. He drank it on the sofa, cuddled up in blankets with Enjolras running fingers through his dark, scruffy curls.
"Apollo?"
"What is it?"
"Are you sure you love me?"
"Of course I'm sure, and don't you dare ever forget it."
Grantaire knew the answer would be the same every time he asked the silly question but he felt the need to ask anyway, for reassurance.
"Now come on, drink."
Once he had finished, he set the mug down on the coffee table and E carried him to the bedroom. Bless, him, he thought, he's so tired.
They snuggled into the covers together, arms wrapped around each other.
"Goodnight Enj, again" R giggled.
"Goodnight, my love." And he made sure to stay this time until they were both asleep.

It was Enjolras who woke this time. To the stir of the man next to him, to fast, unsteady breathing and hushed sobs. He turned his head to see that Grantaire was no longer at his side, but huddled in a ball, his knees up by his chest, on the other side of the bed, without the covers, shivering. He was crying, but only soft tears, the kind that one wouldn't notice if they hadn't heard them before. But Enjolras had. He was having one of his nightmares again. The ones where his father hit him and his mother cursed at him while he cowered in a corner, surrounded by the stench of alcohol. Enjolras knew them well and his heart ached for his boyfriend. He wanted to kill whoever had hurt him so badly, he didn't deserve the pain. He was a good man, he wanted nothing else but to be happy with the one he loved, although he wouldn't admit it, and E couldn't grasp for the life of him why someone wouldn't be able to see that. Why someone would break him like they had. He reached over and pulled the poor boy towards him, bringing the duvet back over to cover him. He wrapped both arms around him and pressed a gentle kiss into his curls. He whispered that he was alright and sang softly to him. He didn't need to check the time because he always woke just before R needed to to make sure he didn't sleep through his alarm. But he'd switched his alarm off this morning like he'd told him to, so he could wake him up more kindly, since he knew he was so tired. Soon, the brunet calmed down, and remained peacefully sleeping, but Enjolras did not let go. He held him tight and he didn't let go till morning.
