It was his birthday today. I was excited for the evening. Hazel had already invited his friends and her grandparents. I picked a steel grey dress and pulled my hair up into a neat ponytail.
Walking to the kitchen, I kept looking at my reflection on the glass panels. I looked nice. My gaze fell on Brooklyn who was so swamped today. I decided to help her while Hazel was in the living room, assisting the helpers.
"Ursula, you're ready." She yelled from the living room and smiled.
"I am." I said.
"You look lovely." She complimented. She looked nice too. She had let her kinky hair fall on her shoulders today. She was wearing a full-sleeved dress tonight, of course, to hide her wound. Nonetheless, she looked so perfect, just like her mother.
"You look pretty. I love your hair." I said, to which she just smiled.
An hour passed so soon. I helped Brooklyn in preparing the main course and dessert. It was supposed to be a small get-together. I peeked in the living room when I heard a commotion. I saw two couples, laughing and making themselves comfortable. Both the men were well dressed in formal suits while the women with them looked impossibly beautiful. I suddenly felt so unbeautiful at that moment.
"Who are those?" I elbowed Brooklyn.
"Those are Mr. Collins' friends." She replied. I recalled Hazel informing me about them. I looked at all of them talking and laughing together. They all were such fine-looking people that it suddenly made me so self-conscious.
Brooklyn went and greeted them before offering them wine. I tried to look for Hazel but she entered the room with her grandmothers and the same woman I saw in the boutique. A middle-aged man accompanied her, who was possibly her husband.
All the people hugged each other and the chatters became louder. "You should go out, Ms. Abraham." Brooklyn said.
I looked at all of them consciously and saw Hazel approaching us. "What are you doing here? Come, I'll introduce you to all of them." She tried to drag me along with her. I was so uneasy looking at all those people. I didn't even know if it was a good idea because I didn't know whether Aoran wanted to introduce me to his friends or not.
"No, I'm good here. I'll join you shortly. Brooklyn needs my help." I told her.
She frowned and said, "Someone else will help her. Grandma wants to see you."
"There are a lot of people." I said.
She turned her head and laughed so hard. "Go, be with them. I'll come in a while. I need to fix my dress." I said.
She shook her head and said, "Five minutes and I'll be here to get you."
A O R A N
It was already eight in the evening when I reached home. The day was already so tiring and mentally grilling. To add to my temper, Levi was still in the hospital, unconscious and the cops hadn't found anything on his system and phone. The day felt so long as didn't get to talk to Ursula since morning. She was sleeping when I left. She was so happy that she was given a chance to reappear in exams that she kept drafting her project files which were assigned to her last night.
I stepped out of the car and rushed inside in a hurry. I really wanted to see her soon now. I didn't comprehend the newfound feeling. I just wanted to be around her.
When I stepped inside the living room was dark. What was going on? And just as to answer it, the lights turned on. I sulked when I saw almost everyone screaming at me in unison, "Happy birthday!"
