My head was a mess, thinking about all I could have done with those eight hundred dollars which were deducted from my stipend, just because I was late.
Okay! I was late and it was my mistake but that handsome freak could have given any other punishment. Why it had to be in monetary terms!
"Perfect! Just fifteen minutes Ms Abraham and your suit will be ready." The man taking my measurements for the alteration of suit said. I was so much in grief. Now, I had to buy the suit too. I should have read the offer letter. Why couldn't I wear a beige blazer and back pant to work. It would have saved me thousands.
"How much will it cost?" I asked.
He thought for a while and smiled, "The blazer will cost you around three thousand dollars and including your shirt and pant, it would range up to four thousand and five hundred dollars only."
ONLY???
"What! Four thousand and five hundred dollars?" I asked in fright. The suit I was wearing was around five hundred dollars. I didn't want the new one. I couldn't afford it.
"I don't want it. It's too expensive." I said. He frowned and collected his things.
"Don't worry, Ms Abraham! It's on Mr Collins."
No! It wasn't. He was going to deduct it from my stipend. Fuck! By the end of the month, I was only going to get two thousand and seven hundred dollars!
I sat on the chair holding my head between my hands. It was devastating. One mistake and it cost me five thousand and three hundred dollars. It was such a huge amount. I couldn't stop thinking about how many dresses I could have bought from that amount. I could have had so many cocktails. Hell, I would have done so many things.
"That's fine, Tristan. Make sure within fifteen minutes, the suit is here." Ms Smitha spoke.
"What! No! I can't afford it. It's expensive." I said.
"You should have been more responsible, Ms Abraham." She said.
"This is not done. I'll talk to Mr Collins. How can he be so inconsiderate."
"Go ahead. Set your foot on axe." She shrugged.
I looked at her in dilemma. Of course, it was my mistake so I decided to shut up and accept whatever was left with me. I didn't want to throw it away. I couldn't risk the leftover money too.
"Good! And next time, be ten minutes early. Don't forget the dress code else I assure you, you'll be fired." She said with a sweet smile.
"I'm not like this. My dad is in the hospital and it slipped out of mind." I said.
"What happened to him?" She asked in concern.
"He met an accident, last night." I said making the most innocent face ever. She frowned and patted my shoulder.
"How is he?" She asked.
"His leg is fractured." I said with brimming eyes.
Sorry dad!
"Don't worry! He'll recover soon. Give my regards to him." She said with a smile. I felt bad for lying to her but I didn't want everyone to think that I was irresponsible and careless person.
Tristan left with his belongings and I sat in Ms Smitha's office, while she worked on her laptop. For a company secretary, she had a nice office. I looked around and wondered if I'd ever be able to do anything in my life.
"When did you start working here?" I asked her.
"Almost six years ago." She replied.
"That's a long time. How did you keep up with such a snappish and irascible boss?" I immediately regretted my tongue.
